Why does Sertraline lose effect during my period?

Hi all,

I have been on 50mg Sertraline for about 7 weeks now. It was helping tremendously up until 3 days before my period. Now in day 4 of my period and I feel just as anxious and depressed as before the meds. I can't stop crying and feel totally hopeless and scared of everything.

I went to the oncall dr. who prescribed me something to calm down when it gets really bad. Otherwise told me there isnt anything he can do and I have to wait for my appointment with the psychiatrist on the 24th.

Can someone please tell me they have been through the same and this will pass? I feel so hopeless and alone...

Heh, its ok, its just your hormones, it dosent help when your on your peroid. Im menopausal, it will get better, its just a very slow working drug, like having a drip each day. You can do this. X

    Bee,

I’ve known others who also felt anziety during “that week” and I did too.

I’m sorry you are struggling. While I don’t have periods any longer, I did experience the change your body goes through during period weeks.  Insecurity, depression, panic, weakness.

For what it’s worth, what helps me is to lay down, put my hand over my heart and slowly, gently pat my chest in a rhythm that I wish my heart to beat.

I also try to slow my breathing and I say out loud...”this is anxiety and it will pass.” I say it over and over. I find my heart slows and my breathing becomes normal.  Put a name on it and say to yourself ...this is simply anxiety..and it will pass.

This GREATLY helps my depression and anxiety.  Sounds weird, but I feel like I’m hugging myself. Hugely calming and greatly helps me get through bad moments. Lastly, I put on very comfy clothing and shoes and I go for a slow walk in my neighborhood. I’ve done this at 3 am. Really helps me.

Wishing you calm days, feel better soon,

    - hugs, x kat
