Why is my wife seeing sharper in the left eye again?

I understand that when both eyes are open...

the better RE info + bad LE info + brain software = Better overall image.

Today why is my wife seeing quiet sharp in the left eye again even when she fully covers the right eye? It is really confusing!

She definitely has cataract as 2 different surgeons + 1 eye doctor have seen and confirmed it. Also our GP saw it with his special torch (without dilation).

Apparently the LE has dense cataract and covers the whole rear of the lens (PSE)!

Is this normal?

That's great. You should hold off on the surgery. My surgeon had said I cant understand why your vision is impacted so much when your cataracts are at such an early stage. So it may vary. But my vision never got better.

This is good news and to me an indication there is time to really investigate and search out more clinics and not be rushed into a decision that has many impacts. The diagnosis (I know personally) at a young age where you aren't expecting to hear 'cataract' as reason for diminishing vision is a complete shock. I needed time like your wife likely does to grapple with it.

Take time to visit other clinics - even if outside your local community to get as much info as you can and find a surgeon who she feels confident in and comfortable with.

My vision have always varied from day to day all the years.

One big factor for me is how tired or well rested the brain is, I think it is because the brain uses a lot of processor power on the vision, but when I am/was tired, my vision was worse, some days I simply gave up on seeing some stuff, and waited till the next day, if it was one of those days, even though the good days was only 20/40 vision.

And the lighting plays a crucial part, to much or to little light could make all the difference. Light coming from the sides could easily cut my vision down to half, compared to when light comes from behind.

So there is a lot of factors, and for me I can only say that these variations is/was very normal.

I still have cataracts in one eye, and it really feels like the eye is getting worse day by day, but it is not, it just because is getting used to the iol in the good eye, the brain plays a lot of tricks on us 😃

Used Snellen test chart on her and her vision right now is-

Left Eye- 20/20 at best and 20/25 at worse

      Right Eye- 20/20 vision

if i were her i would hold off. i was seeing 20/25 with contact lens in my right eye and was pushed into surgery. cataracts are not an emergency and can wait until the patient is " ready". i have a cataract in my left eye, but still seeing 20/20. I won't be rushed this time. surgery is surgery. if it's not really broken, why fix it right now. just my experience.

I would always get a second opinion and until she is unable to see the way she wants then just let a little time go by. I am 63 and had my cataracts done a year ago. I waited 5 yeas when the night time lights bothered me walking my dog and I got scared at night being out like that. My vision was 20/40 and 20/50 with my contacts in and I thought I was okay. Wow! After the removal and no special lense, I see 20/25 and 20/30 and no more contacts. Only reading glasses from dollar store and I always used readers due to contacts. We wish you luck and don't rush on anything. My second opinion saved me $6,000.00. Take your time. Thank you and have a wonderful day. Ruby
