    Dear Stephanie

As a member of the Patient Admin team I routinely skim through most postings and I'm pretty certain I have read some from women diagnosed with PCOS who have yet to have children and who are as worried as you. I can't honestly comment on whether we've had anyone as young as you posting with PCOS but hopefully you'll get some really helpful and supportive replies to your posting.

Heya, i'm only 18 and i was diagnosed about 4 months ago... it scared me shitless... but theres always hope, my mum had it too and shes had 3 children... I'm focusing on trying to shift the weight at the moment, as im not looking to have children yet so i can tackle that when it comes to it... Theres always hope, it was a shock to me to start with but ive had time to research about it and find out stuff... if your not too overweight apparently the pill can help regulate it, but my doctor left it too long and im now over the weight barrier for the pill. The main thing that makes it worse is the weight, i know its a viscous circel, the PCOS makes us bigger, and makes it very hard to lose weight. but its still the main factor of it, the more weight you lose the easier it is to conceive and periods will start to regulate etcetc...

if you wanna chat more - add me on msn or something!

Don't despair! Many women with PCOS go on to have children! I have had the condition for over 10 years and take metformin to help control it. I am actually more fertile now- in my late 20's than I was in my early 20's and teens. Much more research is done in Australia (where I am originally from) and in the USA than in the UK. Speak to your doctor about referral to an endocrinologist and about whether metformin is a suitable treatment for you. Many doctors I have dealt with in the UK do not know much about metformin as a treatment or indeed about PCOS at all. I have also found that following a low GI diet is effective in controlling glucose and thus, insulin levels and your fertility. Good luck!

I was diagnosed with PCOS when i was 13, im 20 now so i know exactly how you are feeling. the advice i would give to you would be just to believe in YOURSELF, nobody can do that for you.. try getting involved in a sport or some extracirricular activity. when i was in highschool my outlet was chorus, cheerleading and softball.. and it helped tremendously. dont be afraid to open up to one of your closest friends about what youre going through. she may not be able to relate but she can certainly listen. i wish there was a surefire cure for this so we as women wouldnt have to go through this. if you would like to talk leave me a message at ...

I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovaries when i was 13.

I was being treated for acne and happened to see a specialist who knew straight away that it was polycystic.

I'm now 24 and have been on the pill every since being diagnosed.

I have my up days and my down days - my hormones seem to be affected quite badly!

Please do not loose hope - i haven't.

It's hard to think of children at such a young age - i knew when i was 13 and it didn't really sink in until i was about 18.

Look at people in the limelight - Jules Oliver, Victoria Beckham - both suffer from this and yet have multiple children.

If you want to talk you can PM me anytime.

    Take Care

    Chin Up
