Why isn't zopiclone and benzodiazepines in a group together

Posted , 3 users are following.

Zopiclone 7.5 mg equates to approximately 5 mg diazepam please see Ashton

Manual ! so why are both not grouped together here? In many instances people are addicted to both as they are cross tolerant as is alcohol.

They could with the help of maybe a good GP be advised to wean over to diazepam and then taper off! People that are ill and need information wouldn't even think of looking at other drugs that work in a similar way on brain receptors ( Wikipedia gaba receptors) any information very welcome.

    Hello

I was curious too about why benzo's and the Z drugs are seen as seperate entities

I found that it would seem the Z drugs bind more selectively to the GABA receptors that drive sleepiness, but not to the ones that reduce anxiety

It would seem the benzodiazepines bind to more of the GABA receptors, thereby having an action on more things such as inducing sleepiness and reducing anxiety - well this is my understanding anyway...

On a personal note, my experience of Z-drug addiction would lead me to say that they "felt" similar to when I was given diazepam. I asked my GP to give me diazepam so that I could taper off from the Zopiclone after 7 years of taking about 15-22mg every single night

The doctor gave me a very short dose of 2mg Valium and would not give me any more..consequently I went cold turkey in my bed for almost a week. I am now clean as of 2 years, but I honestly think being given diazepam to taper off Z-drugs would help the horrendous withdrawals

I agree totally, and people are buying extra from the internet and other places.

Sorry but I dint comprehend this.

If this upsets anyone I apologise in advance.

You are right! We do have to make the government do something about it. So many people's lives are being taken away. In my own family too long to put here but the facts will come out!

I am trying to get people on board but everyone I've been in contact with especially on here are not surprisingly too ill. Solicitors won't touch it saying they don't know anything about it? They don't need to because we all do. Will reply more tomorrow

      Thanks

    Hi BS8,

The reason Zopiclone is a separate group is because there are more users posting specifically about it than Benzos. We used to have separate groups for every drug in this class but as some were not getting any activity we merged several groups. We have done this site wide to "streamline" the forums and it is something we review continuously. I'll have a look at this area when I get time.

    Regards,

    Alan
