Why no carbimazole?

Posted , 4 users are following.

Hi,

I was recently told that my thyroid levels are high. T4 was 84.8 - doctor has put me on a beta blocker called atenolol. I spoke to my friend who was diagnosed with Graves’ disease and she’s worried because I haven’t been prescribed carbimazole? Is this because it’s early stages? Any help or advise would be very much appreciated.  Thanks, Anna

Hi, it is difficult to comment without knowing the measuring units (or even better the normal range) of your hospital's lab. Also, are you referring to FT4 (the free thyroxine level)?

    What are your symptoms?

      Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I’m unsure what measuring units they used for my test. I’ve looked at some websites and books but don’t find the information very easy to understand. I’ll ask the doc to explain it. Thanks again, Anna

I think sometimes GP's can be reluctant to start you on medication as they often don't know the proper ins and outs of all conditions. They may well refer you on to the endocrine team or look for some advice before starting the treatment. Have they made any referrals?

    Hope you get sorted soon.

      Hi,

      Thanks for your reply.

Yes I’m waiting for an appointment with an endocrinologist to see which step to take next. I hope I get sorted too! Thanks again, Anna
