Wife had an upper endoscopy, we're worried about the results.

My wife had an upper endoscopy over a week ago. She's been diagnosed with GERD and dyspepsia. Her gastroenterologist prescribed Pariet 10mg and Ganaton 50mg. She's now 33yrs old and is very worried that as time progress the GERD might causes more damage and in the end causes cancer. Reason for her to go doc is due persistant lower abdomen bloating that doesn't go away over night for over a month.

Her follow up with her doctor is in another 2 weeks so I'd like to learn about her endoscopy so that we'll know what to bring up and discuss with her doc.

Here's the link for the the upper endoscopy.

Here's the screenshot of the upper endoscopy that her doc highlighted but I don't really understand what he said at the time and as time passes by I can't even recall what he said.

I'd really appreciate anyone can enlighten me more about her condition so we can prepare and manage for future.

Hi Firesphere. Your wife had an endscopy and it did noylt show anything nasty tgat is the most important thing and go with itsmile I am 39 years old endiscopy 2 years ago showed reflux and hernia. I am going back next week for another endscopy as I too am bloated, chronic indigestion which is not relieved by prescription ppis. I guess what i an saying please dont stress about cancer. Your wife does not have cancer. And even if she were to get GERD it does not lead to cancer only rare rare cases. Please dont revert to google as I made myself more sick by doing so. You got pretty ok results for suresmile gill x

Thanks for the advice, it's very true that we spent too much time googling abouot this. The more we read the more stressed she gets. Time to go do something else rather than spending our weekend googling.

I have looked at your wife's scope. I am not medically qualified but have seen loads of these. I do not see anything that should cause concern. Yes there was a pocket which was highlighted in one of the still photos that could collect acid that may reflux and apart from two very minor redish patches, the rest of the oesophagus looks a healthy pink.

Even if the biopsies do indicate the small red patches are Barrett's, they are small and there's nothing to indicate any dysplasia let alone cancer. If she is diagnosed with Barrett's, she will receive surveillance scoping every few years to check there is no progression that could ultimately lead to cancer. It is extremely unlikely and if it ever were noticed there are ablation therapies now available to prevent that possibility.

Your wife is on a Proton Pump Inhibitor (pariet=rabeprazole) but at a very low dose. 20mg is the normal maintenance dose. But I assume she has not noticed any acid symptoms.

I don't know which country you're from as Ganaton is not yet available in US or UK. It is a pro-kinetic intended to try and prevent reflux. (There used to be available Cisapride but it was  removed from UK and US markets due to increased risk of heart problems. Currently in UK we only have the anti-emetics domperidone (Motillium) and metoclopramide (Reglan). The former may be obtained from a pharmacist but the latter is prescription only.)

But what is causing the bloating? Has she been tested for H-Pylori?

Bloating can be caused by ingestion of air (when she swallows food), chemical reaction between foods and stomach acid, fermentation of foods remaining in the stomach too long (which the pro-kinetic should help with) or bacterial infection (eg H-Pylori).

Discuss with your doctor whether activated charcoal may help relieve the bloating.

Read more about Barrett's by visiting the www BarrettsWessex org uk website and following the Journey tab. For a fuller understanding of acid reflux, select the Down With Acid tab.

We're in Malaysia, the medical field lagged behind UK/US by at least 3-5years. Might be the reason Ganaron's still around.

No cause for bloating yet but I suspect it might be diet. We're testing on food elimination. If nothing works, she might need to do a colonoscopy then finally CT scan if nothing shows up. H Pylori results negative.

Will ask doc about activated charcoal. Really appreciate your info. Cheers.

I hope she will get tested for H Pylori, a bacteria in the stomach that can eat the stomach lining.  If she tests positive the doc can prescribe an antibiotic to get rid of it.   I had H Pylori years ago causing me GERD in spite of 40mg of Nexium, the strongest Proton Pump inhibitors out there at the time, and one course of antibiotics fixed the issue.

The test result for H Pylori came back as negative. No direct answer pointing to the bloating yet. Thank you for the info.
