Wife has Constant UTIs, Antibiotics aren't working

My wife (35) has constant Urinary Tract Infections to the effect that they antibiotics no longer work.

The trend is:

 - She gets bad headaches.

 - GP diagnoses an UTI.

 - She gets put on oral antibiotics.

 - It's more & more likely that the oral antibiotics don't work.

 - She is therefore admitted to hospital and put on intravenous antibiotics.

 - Hopefully, this work. However, the infection often develops in to septicemia and life threatening.

If the antibiotics do work, she gets another infection within the week. Just before Christmas, she nearly died 4 times within a month because of dehydration and the infection taking hold.

The GP is very worried about the regularity of her infections.

To make matters worse, my wife is now allergic to Penicillin!

My wife also has a Illiostomy, Urostromy and has one kidney.

Hi, so sorry to hear of your wife's troubles. I have been on antibiotics frequently for the last 3yrs because of recurring urine infections, I know have to take antibiotics every day for 6mths and catheterise at least twice daily not knowing if there will be a positive outcome at the end. The only thing I can suggest is either keep going back to your GP or ask for a second opinion from another one and see if they can pursue the matter in a more urgent manner especially as the problems seems to becoming more life threatening. Good luck, I wish you and your wife all the best for 2016.

Hi, I too have suffered with recurring urine infections recently for e coli and decided to google everything about it because my doctor kept prescribing antiobotics which when using the first biotic was not strong against the strain, neither the second biotic and the infection came back again. Yes lots of water yes slow down on the caffeine and the alcohol. But i found my miracle with something from a good health store which is D-MANNOSE POWDER or the pills used for Healthy uninary track an flushes away parasites (only the bad ones and does not hurt the good gut bacteria)  ALL natural and worked for me. What i learnt was that every time you take antiobotics the e coli or parasites in the bladder become resistant to them and the adult parasite somehow passes the strain onto the new younger parasite strain on and on again infection etc etc so when you take 1 teaspoon of D-MANNOSE POWDER in a glass of water twice a day firstly it is a type of suger which does not trigger blood sugar levels It sticks to the wall of the bladder and when the e coli which love suger stick to it , it then is flushed out directly . I big relief more or less within a day or two. Mine was within a day after taking my forth course of antibiotic. Anyway If by chance the name of the item i mentioned has been taken off just go to a good health care shop and ask for a Powder as it is absorbed quicker than the pills that is for '' healthy urinary tract and washes away undesirable pesides" This is on the label. If it does not cure the problem it has helped ease it a LOT.

Hi JK, I'm just wondering why your GP diagnoses a UTI when your wife presents with bad headaches?  Does your GP ever send  a urine sample off to be cultured?  If he did he could make sure he gives the right AB first time.  To have septicemia so often in such a short time is very dangerous and I think your doctor must urgently send your wife to a urology consultant to find out why this keeps happening.  It may be to do with her other problems - but the fact she only has one kidney should be enough to make them take better care of her!  Your GP is right to be worried, but he needs to get an expert to help her.
