Wow! I did not realize how hard it is to diagnose OLP. I think my wife may have it she has pretty much through all you have the dentist to the oral specialist her personal doctor and has been through 2 biopsy's which were negative. But now her mouth is getting more worse with soreness. She has a really hard time eating every hurts. I feel so bad she has been through this 5 or 6 years now. She has been trying all kinds of remedies natural ones too even chelation. Now we are looking into seeing a natural path. Thank you all for your post.

If she has OLP you would have thought the two biopsies would have confirmed it. Has she been to a dermatologist? That is who diagnosised mine.

No she hasn't seen a dermatologist I would have thought the oral specialist would have been the one who could diagnose but she just wanted to make sure it was not cancer wasn't concerned about what it really is. She's trying the baking soda and coconut oil thing now and it really burns hoping it will subside and and her mouth improves. Sorry you all have to go through this if we find something that really works you know I'm going to share it with you.

Most people don't think of a dermatologist at first, but after all it is a skin condition.

I have found that none of the topical cures worked for me. I just had to go on a systemic. I take Plaquenil twice a day and it works for me.

    Good luck.

what side effects does plaquenil give you? I have heard it can cause eye problems ?

Nothing they have given me so far works. The gels coconut oil all worthless. My mouth just gets worse Next week my dermatologist is doing a dental materials patch testing. Probably another waste of time and money

      Hi Donna,

Can you give more information on the Dental Patch Test you took and also if you did any dental work based on the test results?

      Thanks

Yes, Plaquenil has side effects. It may affect the macula, but it is recommended you see an eye doctor to establish a baseline test and then see the eye doctor every 6 months to a year to make sure there are no changes to the macula. I am at the end of my rope so I've decided to try it. I've already reduced the dosage by half and it's still working. Can't say it will work for you, but, you could ask your doctor for a test run.

You could also try Methotrexate. It works great on OLP, but it also has side effects. Read about them on line.

    Good Luck.
