I've recently signed up for the forces, they've deferred me for 2years because of it. Try and lie your way through, they don't usually find out if you tell them it's painless.

    Hope it helps mate.

    Hi Joe,

I have just picked your question up about Osgood Schlatters, posted in July. Although I personally have no experience with it, my 12 year old son has been diagnosed with it as he plays a lot of Football and it is very painful for him.The issue that does worry me for you, is joining the Marines, and congratulations with passing your entrance by the way. My older son is currently undergoing the training and is due to pass out in October, you should be aware of the extreme physicality of the course, you will be asked to carry weights of up to 6 stone for many miles, along with the sheer brutality of some of the exercises such as crawling on your knees and the lifting and carrying in very adverse conditions, it's very tough going.

I think you should speak with a qualified therapist before you join, I dont think you would be able to hide the pain and you probably wouldn't be able to complete the course, you may even make things a lot worse. If I was your mum, I would want to make sure you were 100% up to the task, so please speak to someone and listen to the experts.

You can always join next year and get through the course in one go, rather than risk the disapointment of failing.

Please get yourself fit, why try to hide something when your own and your fellow troops lives depend on you being at the top of your game.

You sound like a very brave and determined young man, so good luck in whichever path you take, but please get expert advice.

Hi. I am now 40 and have just had an op on my knee related to OS I had when your sort of age. I was in the Royal Marines aged 19. I can't remember how 'honest' I was about the OS at the time but it didn't seem to be a problem at selection. It is a condition their medics are likely to be very familiar with anyway. I don't remember the knee pain being too much of a problem except when crawling on the Endurance course (I had- and still have- a big lump at the top of my left shin). I used to wear some sort of knee pad. On balance I would say it is probably best to discuss with the RM medics- if you've got what it takes you've got what it takes and if they suggest delaying your entry so be it. I've had quite alot of trouble with my knees perhaps because I didn't really let the OS limit what I did when I was younger- can't say I regret it though. Good Luck.
