Will I ever go into remission with TN?

I've had TN for about four months now. I had it last year, coincidently at the same time of the year, but it was not so bad and it disappeared after three months. I'm taking Tegretol (100mg) but seem to be taking more and more every day to stop the pain. The pain is in my jaw/cheek area. Should I ask my doctor to give me a higher strength medication? I wonder if I'm stuck with this now and that it may never go away. I'm 63 and work part time but it is a strain and I still have three years left before I can retire on a full state pension. Will this pain ever end?

    Stephen87155,

    Hello,

u need to get on social securitg disability b4 u reach 66 bcause u get more on disability than plain social escurity

ur social securith dusability turns into ur FRA when u turn 66.

Do this nkw and if u get denied u will get thousands in back pay from Social Security Disablity.

talk with Social Security about ur diseases TN is listed now In The liting as a disease now. Get ur doctors to put down that why he/ she is prescribing thiese meds and ask for a sttonger dose. Cont6 tell them u are going to apply for didability. Keep on working have Socias Disabity tell u what u need to do don't apply for Social Srcurity but Social Security Disability. Their is a difference. tell social Security u need disability and tell them to recommend the lawyer fir u, if u get denied and u will win the case doing it ur own self first and then u the lawyer they recommend u get thousands in back pag. in other words u want to get denied at first so do it urself. Go to ur doctors as much as possible get other doctors opinions this willhelp u when ur claim is done with ur records.

if u decide on surgery get the one where doctors use ballkn thetapy, don't stop working. keep working if u stop u will get regular Social Security u want disability.

God bless us and keep us and give us peace

Thanks for your advice. I'll look into that! I'm glad TN is on the list of disabilities now. So it should be.

Hey guys. I've had TN for 21 yrs.

I personally will not take medication ever again because of the horrific side effects on the brain.

What has worked for me was acupuncture with the electric stimulating machine. This machine clips onto the needles making it more effective.

Second thing that worked really well for me was Prolotherapy (dextrose injections) to the face, head, jaw and neck. Naturalpathic drs handle this.

Third thing that continuously works for me, is Magnesium Glycinate. 1200-1600mg a day.

Like you I'm wary about taking these medications. I've been off the carbamazepine for four days now. I should explain that I was diagnosed as possibly having TN by my doctor but after going to see a specialist in Temperomandibular Jaw disfunction at the hospital they think I have TMJ instead. I'm not 100% convinced but I'm going along with that at the moment. The only time I sometimes take the carbamazepine is if I'm at my job. Talking (and smiling!) too much sometimes trigger of the pain in my jaw and it takes it away immediately. I'm going to see if I can be referred to an acupuncturist by my doctor. I don't know what he will say if I ask him. Some doctors are not keen on any kind of alternative treatments! It depends on how open he is to it I guess. I keep hearing about Magnesium Glycinate and although I have some already I have only taken it a few times. I might persevere with that! Thanks for the tip smile

Sorry your going thru this also...I'm in my 30s & had Ten for several years, it came after I had a stroke. The shocks have gotten 100x worser. I'm getting shocks in my face, teeth, head, and my face and head is burning. Its untolerable. I take 200mg of tegretol every 5-6 hours with 600 mg of Gabapentin. I made a Dr appointment and its a week from now. The pain wakes me up out my sleep. I work and the pain is terrible.

My husband has suffered from TN for about 10 years. His MRI showed a blood vessel wrapping around his trigeminal nerve.  He was put on prescription after prescription ( including Tegretol and Gabapenten and so, so many more)...the only help he ever got was from prednisone ( which is a steroid) but as soon as he stopped it (as that can not be taken very long) his pain came right back.  His pain was atrocious and it interfered with his entire life as sometimes he would have four flare ups a day- other times he would have one.  Some were hours long- others 20 minutes. Sometimes that pack that you heat in the microwave would help lessen the pain!! He did also have the Gamma Knife radiation, too. That helped for about one year and the pain was back.   Out of desperation, as nothing was working, I started looking up natural substitutes for the medications.  I found DONG QUAI ( sold at a health food store) was a natural substitute for prednisone and CURAMIN helps to control pain and inflammation.  After some trial and tribulations with experimenting with a salve called comfrey cream ( a great muscle rub- but did not help the pain of the TN- but still not a wasted purchase so that is good), then we tried spraying on magnesium flakes ( mixed with distilled water)and letting that set on his legs, arms, and stomach one hour every morning to absorb into his system, then we tried a mixture of Organic cayenne pepper and coconut oil mix to rub on the painful area, then DMSO and silver, then Hemp, ( you can tell we were desperate) he tried these two pills three times a day....Dong Quai and Curimin (extra strength) also B12 vitamins daily.  Well lets see, he took them three times a day and I would say within 5 to 7 days he stopped experiencing flare ups.  We proceeded cautiously as, really, who would believe this would help...so not to tell anyone he was getting relief- they would think we are crazy.  But one week went by, two weeks, three weeks...I know I started to relax a little bit.  It has probably been since February or March........no flare ups.  He has cut the pills back to two a day.  He has had blood work two times since he started these pills as he told his doctor what he was taking.  His blood work is coming back fine...actually great.  I hope this will help you and others.  I know one thing can help one person and not another but I know he was suffering and myself right along with him.  Our entire life was controlled by this disease.  If you or five or ten or one hundred people, or more tried this and it helped them as it has my husband, it would be wonderful.  It is a horrible debilitating disease.  No One should suffer and go through what I watched my husband experience.  Good Luck!   Report this
