will my neck become more stiff?

Posted , 4 users are following.

My neck is so stiff & sore most days I even thought I had a lump in my neck at one stage but my doctor said it was wear & tear on my neck & back muscles I'm 70 now. As i get more older I have a fear of stiffening up even more. Apart from regular daily 20 min. walks is there anything else I can do? . I know a lot of people on this board are worse off than me & I respect that fact Any word of advice appreciated Thanks. Karry

    Hi Karry,

Neck problems are a real pain in the neck smile In my case it got a bit better when I bought a foam pillow adapting to the shape of my neck. And some gentle exercise, like turning my head and rotating my shoulders, also seems to help. Try adjusting your tv or computer screen so that the angle feels comfortable.

    I hope that's helpful.

Hi Karry. The thing that has helped me most with fibro symptoms is a monthly massage. It got easier each month and was less painful. Might be worth a try a remedial/sports type massage is best but be sure they are aware of your pain limits. VJ

Ps Karry I did tai chi for about 2.5 years before moving out of London. One thing I learned with neck movement wen you are doing the ear to shoulder stretch. Rather than that - concentrate on lengthening one side of the neck and then the other. So lean your left ear gently toward your left shoulder but with the intention of gently stretching the right hand side rather than touching the ear to the shoulder. Then do the same on the other side. All the time being gentle don't over stretch. Hope this helps. VJ

Than you all for listening to me and for your kind replies & advice. I'm now doing some of those neck exercises 2-3 times daily & intend going for a Thai massage. My sister had one & she found it wonderful. I just have this dread of having a permanently fixed, stiff neck like some of the poor misfortunes that I know. I eat gluten free as much as I can. This helps to ease bloatedness of bowel & stomach. I have good days & some terrible days. Today was a good day & your replies cheered me up! I will keep in touch. Karry
