Will skin heal better at lowerpred doses?

Posted , 14 users are following.

Despite efforts to reduce skin tears/jabs they still occur because I wear lighter clothes in summer- 90-100 deg weather in NJ, USA.

I am down to 6.75mg -I go down 1/4 mg every 26 days.

Anyone notice improvement at lower pred doses?

My skin was very fragile while on Pred. and, along with the other side effects ( high BP, muscle weakness ) it took its time going..... about 18 months after getting to zero.

What did improve in line with lower doses was the moon face.

It's 31 ( mid eighties or thereabouts ) here in Norfolk UK. I don't know how you cope in 90 - 100. It's certainly a relief to have been able to discard thee long sleeves.

im at 5 1/2, not much lower than you, although i am reducing much slower than you, using the dsns method. my gp told me that of all the side effects caused by the early higher doses, thin skin was the one least likely to recover, due to my age. certainly my skin looks like crepe paper next to my non-pmr friends, some whom are older,

that said, i have read on forums that some do recover, and some swear by lotions, medicines, supplements, etc, none of which i will use. i dont use soap on my skin, i just let it do its own thing. i bruise at the drop of a hat--most of the time i never know why, and when i get a tear, it can take months to heal. you can still see where i tore the skin on my leg last february.

in conclusion, im hoping my skin recovers--its better than it was at the higher doses so fingers crossed! Best wishes to you!

I'm like you - NO SOAP and get on with it. And it is fine even after 10 years of pred. So obviously I am very lucky.

I have been off of prednisone for over a year. I still cut and bruise VERY easily. My doctor told me that once the damage is done, it doesn't improve. I find only very slight improvement. I had started at high doses.

Karenjaninaz, yes I definitely have seen an improvement, still not great, but much better.

Hi Karenjani i am on 6mg and i still get skin tears and very bruised arms. its our summer in the Uk and it does not look very attractive. i don't think there is much we can do until we get steroids out of our system. at least we are not alone. Take care.

I have always had what's called sensitive skin. I was for about ten years, maybe longer, using a wonderful lotion but the company was bought out by another one and now it's been discontinued. It took my trying everything on the market to find it, and now I'm back to square one. I do, however, find food grade hemp oil very good, it's just not really feasible to use all the time because it is an oil.

ANHAGA, do you apply the oil to the skin or use it in cooking.

I usually just take a tablespoon by mouth at breakfast time! No, not for cooking! The bottle suggests it can be used on salads, in dips, etc, very much all the uses for olive oil, except as a cooking oil. I've used it on my hands though, especially as it appears to work as well as otc hydrocortisone cream without any rebound skin irritation when discontinued.

What a coincidence. I have only recently come off Pred and I was just saying this evening that I think the skin on my arms which looks like crepe paper is improving .....ever so slightly. I am ever hopeful.

I am at 1.5mg and still have problems with skin tears. That is the only side effects that I have from pred, so it could be worse. It is inconvenience, more then big problem, at least that is how I look at it.
