Will the second redressing of my perianal abscess hurt?

Okay, so I had perianal abscess surgery the other day (NHS) and I stayed overnight afterwards. The next day was the day that they removed the operation bandages and packed it with a gauze. What happened when they removed the original bandage was it got stuck to the open wound from dry blood. They had to pull at it a few times and then use water to finally remove it. I never screamed so much in my life (I'm a 17 year old male). When they put the gauze / packing in, it was pain free to my relief. Now I have to go to my GP surgery tomorrow to have it redressed again(have to do this all week). My question is, will it hurt to remove this packing (could it get stuck again it was that just a surgery mistake?). I'm terrified.

Hi this happened to me and it was a horrific pain wasn’t it, it shouldn’t happen again. Packing the wound can be a bit uncomfortable, but if it is, just ask for some painkillers to Be prescribed to you, try and relax and it won’t feel so bad then. You will Be ok, let me know how you get on

Thanks for replying, nice to know there are others out there who understand the pain haha

I went to see the nurse today, luckily she couldn't find the gauze/packing so she didn't have to pull it out (she thinks it might have dissolved or fell out when I used the toilet). So today she only had to pack it which was uncomfortable but much better than my experience that I spoke about in my post.

I have to have a district nurse visit my house tomorrow and Sunday as my doctor surgery don't do weekend appointments. I hope they're as careful as my regular nurse.

That’s good to hear. In my experience district nurses are often a lot more gentle because they have a bit more time. Good luck with everything
