Wind gas problems is this a big part of IBS?

Hi

How many of you have unrelenting gas wind or burping too when eating food?

I am on the fodmap diet - not really changing things with my stools. I long for the day I have a decent solid motion. Sorry for the graphics. I do hope it is just PI IBS - it all started 5 months ago after the semonella poisioning. Can only hope it's that.

Also sorry to ask but can floating stools apart of IBS - been having a lot lately.

Also I'm now wondering if BBQ steak agrees with my gut? Keeping a food chart and that's the only thing jumping out.

Thanks guys for any advice - this forum is a good place to come and hear from people suffering with gut and bowel issues.

I have tried Metamucil too to try and bind my stools I have one day where it was the most normal in 5 months but still a little to go then bam the next day kapow - back to loads of small floating stools. Made me anxious again wondering what the hell did I eat even though everything is on the fodmap diet I'm eating.

Has anyone tried digestive enzyemes? I've been on probiotics for a long time and just wondered if I should give those a go?

I also have a herbal product the chemist recommended for Ibs which ill try.

Cheers

Gas is a big problem with IBS.  I get a lot of gas in the evening from my backside after I've eaten.  I don't get as much in between meals.  Try avoiding fizzy drinks, broccoli, brussels sprouts and cabbage which can be gassy.  If BBQ steak is showing up as a trigger, cut it from your diet.  Maybe the barbecue sauce is the culprit.  Sometimes people react to the so called safe foods on the Fodmap diet and don't react to the ones that are supposed to cause trouble.  The food chart is the best way to see what foods are the culprits.

I wouldn't worry about your stools; just accept the way they are.  I went through this worry too and it made things worse.  Stools can vary from day to day with IBS. Once you find all your trigger foods, this may help your stools.  You could try digestive enzymes to see if thet work.  If not you could always stop them. Have the probiotics made any difference for you?

      Hi ya

Probiotics hasn't fixed the problem I guess over 5 months - there's been a process of some changes but still not as it should be.

I don't have BBQ sauce I just have a steak cooked on the bbq. Maybe the steak is too heavy for my gut.

I agree about the fodmap - I'm eating all the things they suggest but still I'm having the issues - it's also hard to know when assessing the food chart and my stool

Chart - what days food went through. You digest food normally total 53 hours from start to end but that's just an average so the internet says but I'm sure mine goes through a lot quicker. So still confused exactly what's making it worse in certain days.

Plus if it is PI IBS - that's an issue on its own that will take time.

So sorry to ask have you had these floating stool issues too? It's just good to hear if I'm not the only one with that issue. It's just seems to be more apparent now.

      Thanks for always replying

Ps how old are you? Just wondered if you were an older or younger person. I'm 61

Hi Rhonda.. I'm 66 and have had probs with IBS since I was 29. I went for years without any problems but had a very stressful time a few years ago and back it came! I also have gas and burping and sometimes a sort of swelling feeling like asmall section of my colon is swollen it starts in my back on the right hand side and works its way around to my side and then across.. it's worse when I am particularly windy.. you could try cutting out complete groups of foods e.g dairy/wheat/meat and then keep a note and introduce one group back into your diet to see of you can find a trigger that way. Dairy can set me off as can chocolate or coffee at times. It's so temperamental though and stress definiately makes it worse. It is so common in women of our age and has to be accepted and managed as best we can. I wish you all the best.

      Hi

      Thanks for your response

I have cut out wheat and all lactose so hasnt fixed my stools. I am on the fodmap diet and still have episodes some worse than others. I don't get full on diarrea just small stools never one large piece. Some are soft so it's a mind field each time worrying if it's going to be more together as I always used to be prior to my infection

I'm interested to know how often do you have trouble - everyday? Or does it just come and go? Meaning do you have normal most days?

What type do you have? Constipation diarrea or lose stools and frequency as I said above?

Just trying to see if anyone has similar symptoms

      Cheers

Every day.. it alternates.. sometimes it's hard to soft small pellets or is just loose stools.. and somewhere inbetween I will get a small sausage like motion ..  and like you some 'float' ..it's completely typical for IBS .. it will probably sort itself out in time.. have you seen your GP?

My stools don't float; my main problem has been constipation with pellet stools and incomplete evacuation.  Sometimes I had loose. urgent stools. I am 44 and I got IBS in 2015.

      Hi

I have mentioned it to the doctor that I'm still not right and he just says it will take time and that semonella can affect the bowel motions

Finally someone is presenting symptoms like me. Thank you for letting me Know.

As you said everyday it's Alternating.

Is there anything you eat that helps

      Or anything you avoid?

I'm sure my stress levels Interfere too.

Did you have any tests to find out it was ibs? And did you ever

      Have a bacterial infection?

      Thanks again for you reply

I was diagnosed when I was 29 with IBS .. I avoid coffee and chocolate, onions, garlic and cabbage and broccoli.. when I have a bad flare up I will eat very bland food like chicken and rice or white fish, foods that are very easy to digest and dont upset my system. When I was first diagnosed all those years ago,the Doctor I saw at the Hospital said it was so common in women of my age and was brought on mainly by too much stress (which I was going through at that time) .. It's important to try and keep stress levels as low as possible.. you have to try and relax and manage it as best you can. It's not life threatening, it's a big pain in the backside! In answer to your other question, yes I have had various bacterial infections over the years. Try a very bland Diet Rhonda for a few days and see if that helps. it's all trial and error, there is notone that fits all sizes with this problem.
