i have waited what feels like an eternity to see why both my bowel and stomach are so ill so often, i now go in on tuesday coming to try to get to the bottom of this. for people who have had gastroscopies i ask this - how long after having it done did you have to wait for the results and is there anything i should be cautious of? i just would like to know off the real experts, no be scary stories, i am a little concerned of caxxxx anyway. did you take any food with you too?

Hello sam18386 I assume you are going have both an upper endoscopy and colonoscopy to look at your large intestines. I have had both so please don't worry. I am the worlds worst coward and I was fine. For the upper endoscopy I believe most people do not have any sedation but I decided to have light sedation. It was very quick they spray something down your throat to numb it and then they proceed with the examination. You said no scary stories so the only thing that might happen is that you gag a little as the tube goes down. It does not hurt and all you have to do is lay still. Afterwards they should be able to tell you if there are any problems like gastritis hiatus hernia ulcers etc. and possibly recommend medication. For the colonoscopy if you are having this done You will know you have to follow a lower fibre diet and do a preparation to clear out the bowels. This really is the worst part but we have all got through it. You will probably have sedation for this (you will need someone to drive you home if you do). They will tell you what is happening all the way through the scope. I felt nothing except a moment or two of cramps when they turned the corner as the intestines are twisty. You can even watch it on the screen. They will remove any polyps they find and can tell you at the end if there is inflammation hemmeroids etc. Of course you may not be having these tests if so this wont apply. It is usual for those with stomach problems to undergo both to find out the cause which often is ibs as they do not find anything. Just let me know if this helps and any more questions. You don't mention your age but I was 69 when I had one and 70 the other and got through no problems.

Ok Sam that's good. My husband had that as he had both done on the same day mine were a year apart. As you will be at the hospital for a while afterwards to recover from the sedation they may well be able to give you the results then. Good luck hope all goes well.
