Withdrawal from Prednisolone

Hi

I was on Prednisolone for 8 weeks due to suspected TA. I have been taken off it and I am having horrible side effects.  Was the withdrawal too fast ( I was under my doctors guidance) and is my body rebelling or is this normal?  I was on 40mgs then after 2 weeks 30mgs for a week then 20mgs for 3 weeks and then 10mgs for a week, 5mgs for a week, then taken off totally.  My legs and feet are so badly swollen with fluid (?), I have pains appearing in various places on my body (they disappear then appear somewhere else) I am gaining weight although not overeating at all quite the reverse (I put on just ove a  stone on these darn drugs). I had a rash going around my body and legs arms and face.

Any advice or help please would be appreaciated.

Thank you

    Valerie,

I was on a 40mg dose of pred for a while and I was taken off it under guidance much, much slower. I'm not a health professional but reading the support groups for my condition, AIH, the ramp down is slower. HTH.

Hi Valerie66312,I was first put on 60mg of Prednisolone last Nov for supected GCA wich since has been declaired wrong! I have been told to come off Pred starting in April at the rate of 5mg every 2 weeks , I am now on 5mg for the future and I have the same side affects as yourself but after 4 weeks I am feeling a little better .

It will get better but it takes time , Prednisolone is a strong drug.

I also had a TIA 2 years ago and still suffer swollen ankles to day.

If you are still concerend  check with your Doctor.  Terry.

I think it's far to fast to come off steroids. I had to come off at 5 mg. per week.

All the best horrible debases to put up with.

just been told by another Doc. She doesn't believe in fibromyalgia. Asked her what was wrong with me then. Just arthritis

    All the best.

When I was being treated for a brain tumour the docs had me on 16mg of dexamethasone initially (very strong) and later they put me on prednisolone, which is less strong. But, as all this was way more than my body normally needed, my pituatry gland stopped making steroids and, each time I tried to reduce the dose, my body wasn't responding with its own and ended back in hospital four times with various infections. Eventually they put me on a still less powerful steroid (sorry, I can't remember its name, but it began with c) and I was able to reduce it slowly and my pituatry gland started to work again.

Hi - I was on 70mg per day for about 16 weeks and then dropped down by 10mg per day for a week until I was down to 5mg per day for a week, then 5mg every other day for a week then I stopped completely about 3 weeks ago. My symptoms are very much like flu, ie. joint and muscle aches, head ache and nausia (which are OK with Ibuprofen) but the worst of it is I can't walk very far at all without getting fairly exhausted and a very aching lower back.

Does anyone know if these are withdrawal symptoms and if so, how long am I going to have to put up with them - especially the bad back!
