Withdrawal from sertraline, getting slight anxiety, is that normal?

Posted , 6 users are following.

iv been on Sertraline for 6 years,100mg. decided to reduce to 50mg last year so spoke to my doctor who said ok. at beginning of this year i decided, for a few reasons but mainly to do with dealing with menopause symptoms, that i would taper down and stop taking it which i did. my last tablet was end of March. Just last week I started getting a wee bit anxious feeling in my tummy. iv been a bit moody too. anyone know if this is normal? will it stop soon as i can't imagine going through a nervous breakdown again. Im not keen to go back on antidepressants but might need to i suppose. just looking to see if i should persevere longer. thanks k

hey! So sorry you're going through that ! However, to my knowledge, that is perfectly normal . !it is one of the reasons that I put off taking anxiety medicine for so long. They say once you are on them you inevitably end up going back. If you found something that worked for you consider just going back on it, as long as it isn't doing damage to the rest of your body then there's no hurt and taking it forever! It's like taking diabetic medicine, if you need it you need it! Keep us posted though because I'm curious to see

hi liz, I would have thought that any withdrawal symptoms you were going to get would have rear their ugly head by now. It is more likely your anxiety coming back, a majority of it caused by menopausal hormones, unfortunately some of us have a chemical imbalance and are prone to anxiety and/or depression, as opposed to situational a and d. I know it is tough but sometimes we have to accept that is the way we are and as Kmom said if medication works then taje it, have a chat to your Dr re sorting out what is best for you. There is no shame in being on anti depressants as there is no shame in being on metformin or levothyroxine, if we need it we need it simple as, also when I mess up at work or home it is a great get out I just blame the meds! I hope you get it sorted and find the best path for you but please do not suffer without a reason

Hi Liz - I've been on SSRIs for 3 and a half years - the last year was on Sertraline 75mg. This is just to say that i think what you describe is actually a very normal part of withdrawal. whenever i reduce or change my medication i get a little window before the side effects kick in. Although a lot of professionals will say the anxiety and mood swings following a relatively short period of feeling ok is the return of your original illness, its not actually necessarily true. Certainly anxiety and mood swings go hand in hand with coming down on Sertraline so don't panic and don't assume you'll be on them for the rest of your life. I too am going through the menopause and was keen to come off sertraline and try HRT. I'm three weeks off the Sertraline (its taken since last November to come off) and now just trying to stay fit, eat well and lose some weight! I definitely have more energy and focus but still get very tired. The waves of anxiety i was experiencing have lessened and I don't feel quite as low as i did when first started discontinuing. My advice is - don't panic. Give it time, come off gradually and be assured that what you are feeling is quite normal discontinuation symptoms. lots of luck!

I too am reducing my dose and will be completely off soon. With every dosage reduction i have had anxiety for up to a few weeks afterwards so i would say that it is completely normal x
