Withdrawal from venlafaxine.

i am on my third week of taking this drug at 75mg twice a day. It is making me ill and I have insomnia so I want to come off it. I will be discussing this with my GP on Thursday but has anyone had experience of stopping this drug after only three weeks. Thanks. Jane

    Hi Jane,

I really wouldn't give up yet - you don't describe your reasons for taking Venlafaxine but I presume you are suffering anxiety, depression or the usual mixture of both, and Venlafaxine is an effective drug for these but it does take time, and the side effects at first can be pretty bad, I know. I started on 75 mg per day five weeks ago today, went up to 150 mg (slow release) per day two weeks ago, and am still getting worsened anxiety, headaches, inability to sleep amongst other things - but I've been on it before and I know it does srtart being affective after 6 - 8 weeks, so I'm sticking with it. The slow release is better, easier to cope with - have a word with your doctor about switching to that, 150mg once a day. Switching means lost time, as you have to start all over again, and no guarantee a different drug will be any better. Stay strong and tough it out!

Hi Jayne, I am on venlafaxine as well, i take 2 x 75 tablets a day, 1 in the morning and 1 about 330pm.

I started 7 years ago on citalapram after my son was born, after 5 years or so the doctor changed me to venlafaxine. I can honesty say it did work for me. At the beginning of this year I decided I wanted to get off ven, so I decided Easter holidays was the time to do it (I work term time!) the withdrawals from this drug are horrendous I thought I'd be off them in 2 weeks, didn't go to plan! So I started taking 1 75ml tablet a day for the about a month, then when I got used to that started taking half a day, I'm now down to a quarter a day but it's really tough, I'm not depressed anymore it's the feeling of withdrawal, it awful, my advise to you is to get off this asap, speak to your doctor and see if there is another tablet you can have, do some research on anti depressants and decide which on sounds the best for you! Good luck let us know how you get on and what the doctor says xx
