Woried about carpal tunnel surgery

I have just been told that I have Carpal Tunnel and am worried about surgery. I wondered if there are any alternatives? or should I be brave and opt for surgery sooner rather than later.

Had the op done yesterday and it took only half an hour. The local anaesthetic worked very well and the op was painless. I could actually feel one of my fingers improve while the op was underway and I was told to stop wiggling it.

My left hand is all bandaged up and I can do very little by way of cooking, and even dressing is a problem, but the recovery time is only about 2 weeks. It is worth it to get the use of your hand back.

i had the op 2 weeks ago, i get my stitches removed tomorrow.

the op experience isnt terrible, i have a phobia of needles so getting the local anaesthetic was the worst bit for me, you can opt to not see it which i did as i am squeamish but the op itself is about 10 mins from first cut to being sent out the op theatre and the pains not terrible, only need paracetamol and ibuprofen.

my main problem has been that its my right hand which i do everything with so i have been limited and frustrated, also not slept well but then with having CTS since march i havent slept properly anyway! on the upside i got out of cooking xmas dinner lol!!

I had the operation a few years ago and was off work for 6 weeks. That was probably more to do with the fact that my work involved driving and lifting and stuff.

Word of advice - don't do what I did. When the surgeon says would you like to have a look ....... don't. It was like a scene from the Terminator, he told me to wriggle my fingers and then spent ages showing me all the various tendons, nerves, ligaments etc moving. All the surgery staff looked horrified!

Anyway, good luck with it, my recovery was fine.

    Doof
