Worried about bowel cancer

Posted , 3 users are following.

please can anyone with medical knowledge of bowel cancer help please?

Im a 59 yo female with 30 years of IBS

last week I had a severe episode of bloody diarrhoea and my GP has referred me for urgent hospital appt.

2 years ago I had a clear colonoscopy.  I thought it takes around 10 years for any polyps to develop into cancer but my GP disagrees.

Does this sound like bowel cancer? I've had normal blood tests , not lost weight or felt tired.  My bms until last week were unremarkable.

ive had severe IBS episodes in the past but not with blood.

any advice please ? Thank you

    Hi Lisa

Without sounding rude, I think they are urgently referring you because of your age and the blood.

Blood in someone over 45 (I think) is a 2 week wait.

The GP has rules to follow depending on symptoms and the age of a patient.

I too was under the impression that bowel cancer takes years to grow from a polyp.  I had a private colonscopy and that is what the doctor said to me.

I hope everything goes well for you.

      Hello Anne

      How are you?

My problems started after taking antibiotics.  They gave me a very loose tummy.

It didnt stop, she I went to the GP who tested me for CDiff.

It carried on so I then had a Calprotectin stool test, which came back at 35.  (anything below 50 is IBS and anything over 50 may be things like inflammatory bowel disorders).

Well it continued, and I was only going once or twice a day but it was still loose and i suffer with really bad health anxiety, so my GP decided to send me to the hospital.  My cousin (who is 50) is sufferng from bowel cancer ATM and this made me so anxious.

I decided to go private and had my coloboscopy within a week.

Nothing sinister was found.  I did have 2 polyps which were removed and I will need another colonoscopy in 3 years time.

I hope this helps.  Ive donw a lot of reading up about all of this, so if you have any questions, I will try to help.

      xx
