Worried about colonoscopy

I have suffered with IBS for approx 4 years now and I have been too and from the doctor persistently looking for something to help me. The symptoms I suffer seem to have got really bad over the past 5 months. I had a blood test and it came back showing inflammation and I have been referred for a colonoscopy which I have my appointment for next week. I am apprehensive as I don't know what to expect from this, my dad has ulcerative colitis but his symptoms are nothing like mine + I've never experienced blood in my stool. I want to be sedated during the procedure I'm just scared about it and the result I'm 19 I should not be living like this!

No, at 19 you should not be living like this and I am sorry you are not well. It is a good thing the colonoscopy is being done so it can rule in or rule out possible causes. I have akways been sedated and don't remember a thing. The hardest part is the prep the day before. Have you had a breath test done for SIBO? Have you had fecal testing done? I assume you are going to a good GI Doctor. If not, you should be. Good luck!

It will be over before you know it. One minute you're talking then next minute someone is saying your name to wake up. Seriously. You'll be fine. Good luck!!!

Hi Holly. I've had several colonoscopies last few years. i always have the sedation - you just need to get someone to pick you up. you will still be conscious with sedation, so if it gets too uncomfortable for you when they scope round your bowel, you can still tell the doc/nurses around you. they take you to a ward to recover from the sedation for about half hour after. you will get wind pain after - the best thing to do(what i have done) is get the nurse to walk you to the ward toilet & let it out!(yes few farts hun!!) that will ease the discomfort. i agree with margot that the prep the day before to cleanse your bowels is actually the worst part. you definately need to be near a toilet at home when you do it, & expect lots of watery bowel movements for a few hours. it is so important you have your colonoscopy so they can see if anything is wrong especially as your dad has uc, & your bloods show inflammation. if they pinpoint what is wrong, they can treat you accurately & get your symptoms under control. x
