Worried about liver

Hi guys, just wanted some advice on how dangerous my drinking is. I'm 38 year old male, drank heavily for 8 years, gradually built up to 80-100 units a week, beers but mostly vodka each evening. Had an ultrasound 5 months ago which was normal, gamma gt raised to 80 a few months ago but has been as high as 120. Sometimes get pain in upper right side of abdomen. Trying to stop but a lot of stress at work. GP scares me as says that liver can suddenly fail / develop hepatitis or cirrhosis, but my understanding is this is usually progressive? Any advice greatly appreciated.
