Worried about my mother’s health

My mother (age 73) has a had a consistent cough for about 3 months. She coughs so much that it upsets her stomach and makes eating difficult. Around February of 2020, she quit smoking after doing so for 50 years. I knew she would have difficult time having smoked so long. Everything tasted differently and she had very little energy. Unfortunately, that never improved. She always seemed drained. I began to wonder if she'd contracted COVID. She had quite a bit of blood work done and had her bone marrow tested in case she had cancer. It's now been a year and she's under 100 lbs. Her cough is very painful for her. There does seem to be thick mucus when she coughs. When she does it, she can't eat much because it hurts her stomach.

There are so many things going on here, smoking, COVID, that it's been difficult to isolate what the problem could be. Doctor visits haven't been much help. Any thoughts would be appreciated. It's difficult to get her to go to the doctor because of the cost and thr fact she feels like not much us accomplished

If your mother is coughing so badly she may have bronchitis or even pneumonia. What colour is the phlegm? It sounds as though she needs antibiotics.

thank you for the response. she coughs but no phlegm comes up . She says she "feels" mucus but never coughs anything up until she's been coughing a long time. After she's been coughing intensely, she does cough something up and her eyes water.

Her weight loss is very worrisome. This all started with the Covid outbreak but that couid he a coincidence.

Marc.....can you get one of those oxygen saturation level devices that clip on the finger? At least you could monitor your Mothers oxygen levels. I wonder if an inhaler would help her to breathe more easily by opening up her airways. Can you ask at your pharmacy? Look online as well.
