worried about my son

Hi. I'm new to this page, and all of this celiac business. My son is 3, nearly 4. Always been healthy happy little chap. But I have always been concerned with his weight as he is very skinny.about 5 weeks ago out of the blue he had tummy ache and sickness, waking up in the night in severe tummy pain and vomiting. I put it down to a bug. A week went on and still with the pain and vomiting he was admitted to hospital with suspected appendicitis.. This was not the case and they sent him home dianosing him with inflamed tummy glands. Another week went on and I started to notice it was after eating things with gluten in he would get tummy pain and nausia. So I did a trial and took him of gluten. He went back to being a happy chap again. But as soon as gluten was given again a week later he went back to tummy pain and vomiting. So we stuck to gluten free. Any way, doctor wanted him to be tested for celiac so we had to go back to gluten again! He spent 4 days constant vomiting in pain with tummy and sleeping. Waiting on test results now and gone back to no gluten ... We will not be touching it again! He is ok now just still abit grouchy with very pale nearly white poo. I'm worried and very upset not understanding where its come from and why all of a sudden can't he eat gluten. I'm sad because he's getting upset that he cant eat his favorite foods he enjoys and I keep getting upset thinking that in years to come when he's 18 he wont even be able to go out drinking with his friends or do normal stuff like that. Am I over thinking all of this? It's all new to me x

Sorry to hear about your little boy. Please don't worry ( although of course you will) if your chap is diagnosed with CD. It sounds daunting but when I was diagnosed in 1998 it was actually a relief because I had been ill for so long and at the end of the day we don't have to take drugs for the rest of our lives . We only have to be gluten free and have check ups every now and again. These days it is so easy to be GF because there is so much on the market now. Actually, because I eat mainly fish, veggies and fruit and not processed food because of the dangers of contamination I think I eat more healthily than the rest of the family !!

I don't want to advise about the white poo but as a nurse I know this can be caused by many things and if you haven't already done so I would inform your GP and if necessary ask to see a paediatrician.Good luck with it all and let us know how you get on. Your are definately not over thinking things and if the worse comes to the worse when he is adult he can always drink wine !!

Thank you for the reply. It's nice to have found a place to talk about it and read what other people are saying. My partner doesn't like to talk about it as I think he's trying to fathem it in his own head.

I find lunch box shops most difficult at the moment. It's costing a bomb in tescos free from range. IV never bought such expensive bread before!

Hi amanda, I really feel for your little one, it's so hard to get your head around and I'm struggling at the moment and it's not been officially confirmed either.

If he is coeliac then I suppose he will adjust in time but it's such a palaver getting used to avoiding gluten. Let's hope it's something easily tackled and cured eventually, poor little man..

Hi Jennifer, yes so hard to get head round. But like you say I'm sure in Time we will adjust. I just wish on packaging they would make it simple and like they put suitable for vegetarians they should put a little sign for suitable for celiac. Some things don't say and Iv accidently given him gluten the uva day thinking well if its not on there it wont be in there. How wrong was I!

Good luck for your results xx
