Worried about my son's hip

Posted , 4 users are following.

This past september my 10 yr old son was diagnosed with SCFE and had surgery the following day. A screw was put into place. so now 4 mos out he was released to do regular activity of course nothing extreme. This past weekend he was limping but said his ankle was bothering him and yesterday he came to me complaining of pain in his thigh. Pain in his thigh was the first symptom when all this began. He is having pain in the same thigh he had surgery on. I guess my question would be could this just be due to inactivity for the past 4 months or is there a cause for concern?...do I give it a couple days or should I immediatly call the dr.?

You should call immediately. There might not be anything wrong, but it's better to be safe then sorry. I had surgery the day after as well when I was 11, and I was on crutches for nearly 7 months and I couldn't participate in any activity for nearly a year. Four months seems a little early to me.

Hi Nikki, My story about my daughter is on this groups page, so I know all about what you are saying.

I would go to the Doctor's imediatly. There is so much post operatice areas of concern; I had to take my daughter back and not once was I told I waseing their time.

About 4 week after her opperations (on both hips) I started to yake her swimming. Becky could only do mornings at school so I took her swimming and she loved it!!!

Her mobility improved, as well as her self esteem; she hated people looking at her and her scars; but as she went during term time she did not have to worry.

My daughter only ever had reffered pain in her knee, so it took my GP a while to order an xray, and even then he was surrprisd at the result.

My daughter was almost eleven when this happened to her in 1989. She is now 37 and has five children (I only have one child) with ages ranging from 13 almost 14; with  the boy and girl twins age nine months old.

Her consultant said she would have to have hip replacements wwhen she was older; just befor she had the twins she could not walk; she is in constant pain and the xray she had done said her hip looked like an 80 year old.

We are waiting to be seen asap. but she is hoping it would be sooner rather than later.

I hope things go well for you,

    best wishes

    Jo

I'm so sorry your Daughter has experienced so much pain. I truly hate that for her and her children. I hope that she one day is pain free or that her pain becomes minimal. Thank you for taking time to message me and share your experience, information, and input. I will be contacting my son's dr.. Also if he continues to have issues I'm considering contacting a pediatric orthopedic specialist. Thank You again for your time. Nikki

    Hi

How did you get on with your son?

My son had a chronic SUFE (SCFE) 18 months ago, he has been on crutches/wheelchair since then, he has had an external fixator screwed to the pelvis and thigh to take the weight off the hip while it was reconstituting and the bone was soft and at risk of collapse - we had this on for 4 months.  He has also had 'trial' bisphosphonate treatment, with an Endochronologist, all to try and save his hip.

I would not hesitate to go back to your consultant, as I understand that even with a small SCFE, where there has not been too much movement that Avascular Necrosis can happen if the blood vessels have been severed to the Femoral Head.  The pain could be muscle pain, as he probably has not been using the affected leg very much and has lost muscle power in his leg, but my son's consultant was X-raying his hip very few weeks to check on the Avascular Necrosis, so I am sure that another X-ray would not do any harm.

We have been very lucky, our paediatric orthopaedic consultant at North Staffs has been brilliant, others are not so good from what I can gather.

Are you in the UK or USA?
