Worried I have colon cancer

In November I began having constipation problems, as well as thin stools. During the preceding two or such weeks before this I had nausea and got sick whenever I tried to eat much, as well as insomnia, which seems odd to be associated with this problem. But for the last five months I have irregular bowel movements, and it's getting a little worrying. I also have an occasional loss of appetite. The only positives are no blood, no pain, fatigue or weight loss so far. I have been to the doctor about this and they try to attribute it all to fiber. They also found a lot of stool lodged in my colon during an x-ray. I want them to give me a scope, but they feel it's unneeded. I am 23, slim, eat too much meat and too little vegetables then I should, have bowel problems on my mom's side and an unknown history on my biological father's side of the family. Due to my age colon cancer would be very unlikely, but not impossible. I'd like some insight on what you all think of my situation.

My advice for what it's worth is to insist on a colonoscopy. It may reassure you, of if there is a problem then it may be treatable and in the early stages. You are still having bowel movements so obviously no complete blockage. On the positive side, it may be simply adjusting your diet. Best wishes for a worry free outcome.

I think you have answered your own dilemma. You say you eat too much meat and very little vegetables. You have the classic symptoms of constipation due to lack of fibre. As we get bound up, our colons will swell to accomadate the feces and will lose water, becoming hard and difficult to pass, and indeed can end up sitting in the colon and becoming impacted. This is generally in the large bowel. If you are not drinking much water then this will only aggrevate your problem.

As to the thin stools, this is known as 'sneaky poo' I kid you not. It will be the softer feces going around the harder backed up and then form into a thin stool as it leaves your rectum. Hence it looks like a normal poo but it isn't, you will still have backed up bits to dislodge.

The cause of you feeling sick is that the fact is your bowel has nowhere else to put that food and it is causing distenstion back up the pathway to the tummy.

The thing to be concerned about right now is FUTURE colon cancer. If you do not change your habits now, you can and probably will end up with colon cancer. Too much meat is a proven factor. Being chronicly constipated is another. These are facts we know of causes of colon cancer regardless of hereditary factors.

You could get a CT scan which could show any causes other than constipation however having already had an Xray, this would have shown the cause immediately, I doubt this will be needed.

Sometimes the easiest solution is not always accepted but try a bulk forming fibre, which you can buy at a pharmacy, you can get drops, tablets or powder you add to a drink. Try adding a small amount of veg to meals and swap out red meat for fish, or chicken. Baby steps at first, and you should see a better bowel very soon.

Remember prevention NOW will help when you are in your 40's. I really do not feel you have a major health issue at this point. Cheers.

How long would it take to see results from this? And is it typical for diet induced bouts of constipation to go on this long?

If you go whole hog and use some bowel moving drops that should work overnight, but it won't solve your problem long term. If you alter your diet you will have to be patient and wait. If you put more roughage say like bran in your breakfast porridge (for example not saying you even like porridge!) this may take a week or two to work and give you a bowel movement daily. It takes quite a while for the overly stretched bowel nerves to do their job in triggering a movement once you have been constipated for a long time.

You will need to alter your diet and be patient., It can take several weeks to see a result. Go slowly and introduce more fibre foods. Wholemeal instead of white bread, beans (not baked in a can but if you must then those are ok) and some starchy foods like potatoes. You might find you pass wind more often but that just means they are doing their job correctly!

Yes, it is very common with your diet to have bouts of constipation that go on that long. In fact they can get to the point of impaction and that is a surgical emergency! Look online for good food ideas you can pick and choose which ones you like and take it from there.

Like I said; it can take a few weeks before you see any results, so be patient! But do try and do the right thing to stop any future concerns of cancer or impaction or blockages.

    Cheers
