Hi, just wondering how you are now and whether you are still taking the alendronic acid?  I have recently been prescribed it and am scared myself about starting it.

I am still taking alendronic acid and haven't exoerienced any bad effects except the dentist besing worried about taking a tooth out. she referred me to a dental hospital and it was fine ( and was done for free!). I had a bone density scan nearly 3 years ago and was told to go back for another 2 years later. I am going to ask the doctor to refer me this week.  I was scared about taking the tablets but know several people who are taking them and we have all decided it is worth it to try to slow down our bones crumbling we hope! I hope it works for you

Thank you....I must admit I know a couple of others who seem fine, but I suffer with Fibromyalgia and arthritis and was concerned about the muscle problems so many other people seemed to be suffering with.  I am also suffering with heartburn at the moment and didn't know whether to start the tablets whilst still suffering as it is listed as a side effect!

I stopped taking it several months ago as I realised it was making me very depressed. I've also since found out I have a stomach ulcer.....thought the pain was left over from my broken ribs. So, not taking any meds at the moment. Taking Vit D every morning, exercising as best I can, and trying not to get stressed as Strauss is really bad for bones. Awaiting s referral to osteoporosis clinic.

Does seem to affect a lot of ppl, sorry to hear about your ulcer sad  it is such a hard balancing act.  I take the iCal-D3 and also taking magnesium and trying to up the exercise.  Hmm...i have been stressed so that probably didn't help with my fall last year - tripping over a Christmas present!  Good luck with your referral i would be interested in knowing how you get on.

I had side effects when starting it and more when stopping it. As far as I can tell, the only thing that AA did for me was make me rouse myself and find out what osteoporosis really is and how the bone renewal system works. I was only on it for five months and it's two weeks since my last pill. It already is beginning to fade into the dim past

    Good Luck

I have been taking Aledronic acid for 3 wks now. I was ok for the first 2 wks but now have chronic heartburn and nausea. I am more exhausted than usual. I am thinking of just stopping and taking my chances.

Dear Susan - read the leaflet in the tablet box, and also look at data on the manufacturers website. Only you can decide. If you were prescribed it for OP as a preventative measure against the risk of fracture, remember that is just a risk.  Only you can decide.

Very sensible message further down, about how many people tolerate AA well, the majority of people will only post a negative experience.  Like Aristotle, this has made me look into how bone 'works'; I have had a bad experience, not everyone will have had that. 2 weeks off and I am feeling calmer and able to cope, and go back to what I was doing (walking, gardening, generally active, some swimming).  I risk assess everything - carrying pans, anything remotely heavy and don't rush to minimise chances of falling.  I went to GP re pais, extreme fatigue, inability to sleep and fibromyalgia was diagnosed, but now I don't think it was that at all.

Yes, I read all the info and studies. I agree with you - it is a risk, not a given. Quallity of life is important and I don't want to feel sick all the time from a drug. I am not going to continue taking it. Thanks for the support.

Hi Denise, I have been taking alendronic acid for 2.5 years. It is just recently I've been experiencing side effects...aches in the joints in my foot. I'm sure for such quick side effects as you are having, you should go back to your doctor. I was 53 when my dexa scan read -4. I did many other things for osteoporosis because I didn't want to take alendronic acid. I also considered myself very fit. I began the alendronic acid when I was 56 because my dexa score was still -4 and I sustained a slight compression fracture without falling or any thing. Now my score is -3.9, not much difference. Recently my doctor said I can take a break from this med.
