Worsening pain- hernia?

Hi, I've already posted a similar question a while ago but that was before this pain got worse. I'll try and describe it as accurately as I can and see if it rings any bells with anyone. The pain I have is mainly in the area of my breastbone and to the left under my breast. Most of the time it's a stinging pain, though sometimes it feels bruised, and when it affects the whole area it aches. It's definitely not gerd type burning. It gets worse if I move or sit slumped, but it is there over 70% of the time I would say. It even woke me at 4 am the other morning.

I've read that some women can't stand the feel of their bra, and it does seem to be mostly in the area of where the bra strap goes round your ribs. I've taken to wearing a very light bra because of this.

I had a repeat ogd on Friday and they found nothing ( as far as the info you get afterwards told me).

I do have a hernia, that was diagnosed last time.

Also just out of interest, how do they know which type it is?

Thanks all

    Hi,

I had GERD for years and was taking Nexium.....it worked very well .

then I put on a fair amount of weight and on my last scope they discovered a h/h.

your recent pain sounds like classical h/h.....read the other forums.....many people have your symptoms.

take control....Demand to know what type of hernia it is and it's size.

then start doing all the things you can do to control your h/h.

Thanks Al, it's made me feel better to know that it's classic type symptoms! I've got a barium swallow on Friday so I'm hoping I'll get to see the bugger, but definitely want to get on top of this. I've got my lpr under control so now just this and the pain I have when swallowing. Hopefully the xray will help with that, too :-)

Hi Stella thank you for sharing your level of pain. Can I ask does it ever go away?

Sometimes, but I would say it's there a majority of the time. There's degrees of it, so sometimes it's a stabbing pain and sometimes a bruised feeling and sometimes an ache. Funnily enough it's not here now. I'm just waiting for it to kick in again. I'm going to keep a diary for a few days and see if there's anything that flares it up.

Thank you Stella, will contact GP today and check on my chest pain. I hope your treatment goes well this week. Again thank you for sharing your experience.

I did have a flare up a few years ago, was diagnosed from GP as gastris, although I did not have any tests just some short term meds. I lost weight and removed all trigger foods from diet and apart from lots burping and occasional pain have been ok until early hours sat morning, since then have had central chest pain and it hurts more when eat. Hence going to GP today if I can get in.

once again thank you for taking the time to share your experience and feed back to me.

      take care.

Hi Cheze, your symptoms certainly sound like gastritis or gerd. Hope it all goes well at the gp today. I've been pretty much ok this morning so fingers crossed for a good day for me. I've had gastritis recently and it does tend to flare. Hopefully you will get some answers  smile

    Hi,

They should see which type of hh from the barium xrays.  Otherwise you really need to have an endoscopy.  As you have pain on swallowing, ask if you have a Schatzki Ring.  Sometimes,

they can fix that while doing the endoscopy.

Diet is super important to manage a sliding hernia.  Eat mostly alkaline forming foods, and less acid forming foods, and try to keep slim.  If I go over my top weight, my hh symptoms flare up.

Hi Paula, had an endoscopy an Friday and it came back clear. I'll ask about the ring thing at clinic though. I know the cons has queried achalasia and EE, though I think it may be spasms as it comes and goes. I'm also wondering if the doc irritated my oesophagus during the endoscopy as the pain in both sites has been worse since then. I haven't been overweight for 40 years now, lapsed anorexic, me!

Thanks Paula, I agree diet is so important and I did loose 4 stone a couple of years ago and kept it off and try where poss to eat alkaline diet, if I don't then I can suffer.

GP today thought my chest pain was muscular related touching mum in wheel chair late last week. I think stomach inflamed also as I know my body and have been under stress lately which often starts it off. They do not seem to think my symptoms need further exploration. If I M&A no better after a few days I will go back.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and for the sound advise.

kindest regards and hope you continue to keep well

That's great it was clear.  They would have seen the Schatzki ring in the endoscopy.  Yes, you probably have a bit more inflammation from the endoscopy.

Goood luck with finding the cause.
