Would I have felt a sharp pain instantly when my S1 disc slipped?

I have suffered mild sciatic pain for a year or two, but it was always tolerable. A few months I was doing repetitive lifting, a few hours after I felt my lower back had tightened, the doctor said I had back spams and it would just take some rest. A few months later I was laying in bed and whatever way I moved I felt the sharpest most intense pain in my lower back, butt and all down my left leg, easily the worst pain I've ever experienced with my back, is it likely that this was when the disc herniated?

    Hi Phillip,I suffered a simaller condition for 7 years,fitting a conservatory roof I

Twisted and had a sharp pain in back followed by sciatica down left side and in both but cheeks.

It took 5 years of suffering until they gave me an MRI and discovered I had a prolapsed disc.

I had a micro- discectomy which worked for 3 or 4 months ,then symptoms came back,so on 22/10/2014

I had a spinal fusion on L4L5 disc still doing physio today but feeling reel good.

ask doc for MRI I hope you find problem,

    All the best steve.

Hi Steve, thanks for the reply. I have had the MRI and it show up a herniated disc which is pressing on the nerve. What I'm curious about is when the disc herniated first would I have felt that sharp pain.

It sounds like a herniated or bulging disc. If it were me I would see a spine specialist for a MRI scan. If there is no sign of stenosis but does show a tear in the disc which may indicate you did rupture the disc--it may have become infected. I'm not a physician but speak only from my own personal experience. Lee

Sorry my browser did not show your latest reply. I would go with the MRI and the doctor. Its possible you can rupture/bulge a disc without feeling pain. I've heard the majority of people with bulging discs have no pain. So perhaps it is possible to rupture the disc without feeling pain. I do know disc do heal themselves but if tissue is impinging on a nerve - it seems that needs a physical intervention. According to MAST theory Proprionicbacteria enter a ruptured disc during the healing process and the same bacteria exude a corrosive Proprionic acid that has a corrosive affect on surrounding bone which causes inflammation, bone edema or Modic changes. The abnormality in bone can be painful. Lee
