Would you know if you dislocated your new hip?

Morning Gang :-)

I was wondering if you would know about a dislocated prosthetic or not. I gave myself a scare yesterday and was really quite shaken. My own stupidity as I tried to get off the chair in a pre-op manner (breaking the 90 degree rule) as I had momentarily forgotten about the surgery! Thankfull all appears to be OK. But, it got the old grey cells working...

I am sorry if there is a thread regarding this, but I could not find it and would be happy to be shown the way.

Can you stand on your leg? Putting weight on the new hip? If you can, and can still walk the chances you have dislocated are very small. My consultant said you will know if you dislocate, it is agony and requires an ambulance.

I hope this reassures you a little. All of us tweak our hips, make mistakes and generally forget the odd thing. Mostly our hips are completely fine. I felt like I was living on my nerves remembering everything every day, trying not to make a mistake, and being quite tired, the combination is not easy in the first few weeks.  But you sound well and comfortable I am hoping you are fine. Once you get to six weeks you start to relax a little, the new habits become second nature and you start to feel much more comfortable about doing things.

I hope you are okay this morning x

Thank you - that is very reassuring. Yes, it all appears to be fine and I wizzed down the stairs without a thought. I think I was shaken and furious at myself.

I can't wait for the 6 weeks. I am so concerned about rolling over in the night that I sleep at a 40 degree angle with loads of pillows supporting my back.

This forum is blessed to have such a wealth og knowledge.

Morning, Hogtog, I did the same just after mine. Got up without thinking and there was a 'feeling', it pulled me up and I behaved my self after that.

In the early days the joint has not settled and bedded in so still movement in there. I didn't have pain but my body reacted strongly.

I asked my friend who dislocated hers and she said "oh you'll know, the pain is awful".

Listen to your body, and go easy!

YES!!! That is what happened. Oh, thank you for the reply. I feel comforted. I did wonder if (as the new hip does not have any nerves) you would even know.

If you dislocated, you'd be in absolutely excruciating pain - and thankfully you obviously are not.

Someone here posted about when he dislocated, and he had to be helped so that he could lay flat and wait for the emergency crew.

If you do dislocate, it is possible that you may even need surgery to put it all back in place.

I am so pleased that you raised this discussion! I too have thought the same and worried that I may have done harm when I stood up without thinking and realised I had broken the 90 degree rule. Fingers crossed we will never have to experience it!

      Hi Michael

I am 3 weeks post op today. On 2 crutches outside, but can get about most times on 1 inside. I have even started hobbling without any crutches when I'm in the kitchen as it's so much easier than tripping over them as they're leaning against the counter! I am trying to take it easy with plenty of rests in between periods of activity but it's going to be a gradual process methinks!

Wishing you well in your recovery.

    Hi hogtog

without a doubt you would know i you had dislocated your hip.

you would be in agony. You would not be able to move that leg at all

The pain would be worse than the pre op pain you had and you would need to phone for an ambulance emediatly

    Hi Michael

Please dont worry by the sound of things its just a painful blip on the road to  recovery. Its especially scary when everything seems to have been going fine and you move without thinking. I have done this too, getting out of bed once I moved my operated leg badly and had this awful pain and was so worried. But I was fine when I stood up and started walking around.

Also a couple of weeks after my first op I rolled over in bed without thinking on to my good side which felt very strange and unsupported on my op side and so I quickly lay on my back again. I made sure then that I had a pillow either side of me so I couldnt roll over on to my side again!

Its still early days and it takes a while for your new hip to embed. So if you do something it doesnt like it tells you in no uncertain terms to "Stop that and dont do it again"!

Take care, really take care! 😀

      Hi Linnet

You make me smile. Yes, my body did relay a message along those lines! It was loud and VERY clear.

Crumbs - rolling on your side? I dream of those days. Tell that to the kids today,,,,tut,,,, ;-)

      You take care too

Michael, I am now at 3 weeks post Op #2, and I think I am getting the same as I had last time - a feeling that I have split asunder at the wound (I even checked to see I wasn't bleeding, and I wasn't) - I think this is just the disolvable stitches finally parting and leaving the internal bits loose again (or whatever happens inside us). It happened when I was bending to get in the car on both occasuions.

Have you had this at all?  Anyone else?

Ummm, was the outcome OK last time - guessing not. You are ahead of me on the time line but I have made a mental note. My surgery was a week ago today.

Outcome ... of the surgery - no, of the 'splitting feeling', yes.

It just felt that way, but nothing was amiss at all.  Just after it happened, i was able to sleep on that side.

OK, so if you get it (and no-one else has reported it), it could be a couple of weeks away yet.
