Hi I'm 16 days after my operation. How do I clean my wound should I be massaging it ? as it's very lumpy only sore/tender as I've stood up for too long.

It depends on the healing. If it is fully healed, no scabs or weepy bits, then wash gently and pat dry. If there are still some bits which aren't quite there then pat gently with a damp clean face cloth (no soap) and pat dry. Personally I wouldn't start to massage it for another two or three weeks as it will still be stretchy.  When you do massage it then go along the scar rather than across it.

Hi there,  I had a lumpy scar, I massaged it with Bio oil everyday and now at six weeks it is fine.  As long as it is clean and dry you can massage the oil.  It helped the last few scabs to fall off of mine too.

definitely use Bio Oil...massage firmly in small circles...once any scabby bits have gone just gently wash in the shower....probably about 8/9 weeks I really noticed the lumpy bits going..now 16 weeks I think...its just a feint red line...no hard bits and virtually no tenderness...patience...it all takes time!

Prior to surgery the doc had me buy Hibiclens which is an antiseptic/antimicrobial skin cleanser. I washed the area he was going to "surgerize" for five days before I went to the hospital. Since I had 1/2 bottle left afterwards, I used that on my incision while in the shower starting about day 10. I would have gotten some Phisohex or similar if I hadn't had the Hibiclens. It's important to keep the wound clean. Even a quick shower does the trick. I knew I'd be busy with PT and didn't want to complicate my recovery with d a r n infections! I'm 9 weeks post op. Live in the US. What is Bio oil? I started using Vitamin E oil yesterday.

In UK its fairly common to use for allsorts of skin stuff, stretch marks, scars etc...google it and see if you can get it ...miracle very oily liquid..quite expensive here but a little goes a long way!

Hi. Lavender oil is really effective. It heals wounds beautifully and also prevents infection. Use it neat. No need to dilute it with other oils. Apply liberally to whole area after washing and drying thoroughly in the morning and put it on again in the evening. Boots do a slightly larger bottle in their Botanics range.

Hi Claire I would clean the wound with just clean warm water until it's healed and I wouldn't massage it till it's healed up. Mine was lumpy but just let it go on its own well untill the scare had healed then just gentle rubbing and ice Pac
