Wound swelling

Has anyone experienced significant swelling of the wound site? I'm on day 10 and doing ok, but the wound has been quite swollen under its dressing. Today, after my daily short walk, it seems to have increased in size quite a bit. I have a very swollen left leg and was expecting that, but don't recall anyone mentioning swelling of the wound itself. It's not particularly hot, just swollen. I've got what they call a Jubilee dressing which will not be removed until the sutures come out on Monday. Have I overdone things, or is this normal?

My advice is to contact someone asap.  Infection is nothing to mess around with. You do not want to go through the weekend with this possibly getting worse.  If nothing else call your doctor's office and follow their advice.

Better yet see a doctor, maybe one of those specialty care centers at the mall where you can just walk in with no appointment and let him/her do some blood work to see if you have an elevated white blood cell count which would indicate infection.

Some swelling is normal in the early days post-op - especially after exercising.  I found that icing frequently helped.

These are things I was told to look out for after surgery:

Increasing redness, particularly spreading from incision

    Fevers (above 101 degrees

    Persistent drainage from your wound

    Ankle swelling

If you don't have any of these you're probably ok, but it never hurts to ask the doctor, and as you're having sutures out on Monday, I would certainly ask about the swelling while you are there.

I was given the phone number of the ward when I was discharged in case of any problems or queries, so is it a similar option for you just to give them a quick call and ask their advice?

im sure they would sooner see you sooner rather than later if there is a problem and if there isn't a problem at least a quick call will set your mind at rest until your routine appointment on Monday

i would get it checked out asap by ringing the ward and see what they say, i was told this when i was discharged back in may

Swelling is normal. If you aren't having intense pain, a fever, severe ankle swelling & there is not a lot of drainage (soaked bandage), I wouldn't say you've over done it. For swelling I was instructed to do this: Elevate your leg & ice the hip for 20 minutes every hour you are able to do so. This really does work! Also, do 25 ankle pumps while the leg is elevated. I use several pillows while laying on my back & make sure my foot is higher than my heart. Do what's comfortable! Take care!

I echo other's thoughts here, best to see a doctor if you're concerned. I'm not sure but I would be concerned about a wound infection because you don't want that travelling into the hip. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks all for your helpful suggestions. I iced the wound and raised my leg and this seems to have done the trick. The swelling is down, but I'm going to keep an eye on things. I had no redness or particular heat or weeping of the wound, and I didn't have a fever so didn't think there was an infection, but of course, it's the thing to look out for. I think I may just have overdone the walking.

    Thanks again.

So glad you're doing a bit better.  I was told to raise my leg any time I had done a bit of exercise.  This and icing have helped to keep my swelling down, too.
