Wrist fracture

I fell and broke my wrist seven weeks ago. It was a collies fracture but with two breaks. It was put
Into plaster for five weeks. I am now two weeks out of the plaster and I can't believe how horridly
painful it is! I am doing the exercises religiously and am trying not to overuse it. The worst pain
comes from the little finger side and not near the thumb. Where the fractures were is uncomfortable but the other side of my hand is worse. That side was black and blue when the plaster came off and pretty badly swollen. Some, but not all of the swelling has receded.
Anyone else had this experience? Not sure if I should return to the surgeon or, if it's pretty normal,
stop whining!!

I shattered my wrist the weekend after Thanksgiving. I'm going through that as well.
My Dr says and my PT says it's normal, even if it don't feel like it.
I am sick of this tho. Very slow progress.
Feel better soon.
PS: my wrist hung on the pinkie finger side till I did a few weeks of strengthening.
Now it's finally looking normal. Bone at wrist area on pinkie side still protrudes. I was told it's because usually it's surrounded with muscle
And now that muscle is broke down and gone. I have to build that back up again, and it takes time.
Good luck

I too have muscle waste in my hand & arm so have a lot of exercises to do...wears me out as its day in day out.
Frozen shoulder is not helping either.
Hard to feel positive all the time but got to work hard on moving my stiff fingers & very stiff wrist as I am desperate to get behind the wheel of my car🤔😊

Hang in there, Elaine, it WILL get better eventually but it is not a quick fix & the older you are & more extensive the break the longer it takes.
I broke my wrist back in Jan '15 (you can see my posts). I felt just like you do, I wasn't prepared for the swelling & stiffness especially thumb & fingers as they hadn't been injured.
The physio I had wasn't very good, 20 mins a fortnight & an exercise sheet, she didn't massage or take measurements or anything so I looked online & found several that helped such as the one like praying, also a stress ball to squeeze.
But like Wendy says, keep doing the exercises, be kind to yourself & it will heal, I'm 67 & mine took 8 months & I don't even think of it these days.
All the best to you.

Oh bless you for replying to my post. It is the most painful & frustrating injury Ever!
I do my exercises rigourously, 1 step forward 3 steps back it feels, but there is improvement, although little & slowly, I am hopeful.
Whats hindering me moreso is my frozen shoulder, so I am now awaiting a procedure on that. Im 61 but feel 101 atm!!
I will not give up....I'm too stubborn 😊
Best wishes to you & I hope you keep healing.

I Know how you feel relived am having severe pains I need my hand. I had a plaster cast on it but it got very tight and my mum was at work so I had to get it off myself. I have had the splint that they gave me when I first injured it and I've had that in since yesterday and it hasn't done anything I have also taken pain killers hasn't touched it and now when I make a fist the little finger severely cases pain going down in my arm I don't know what to do either x

Oh bless, I can feel your pain. I am 4 months down the road since I broke my wrist & had a plate put in. I too had pain on the thumb side & little finger. This has eased but if I over exercise it does hurt.
Do go back & see your doctor if painkillers are not helping as they can give you stronger ones.
Keep up with any exercises you have been given but do not overdo them.
I now have a frozen shoulder to put up with as well & believe me my morale has been pretty low. You will get there, although it may not feel like it...it just takes time, exercise & a lot of patience.
Good luck & please go back to your doctor...that's what they are there for.
Kind regards

Hi. how is your wrist now?
I had a football injury to scaphoid and a metal screw inserted which has shifted over time and painful now. Like a lump over my pulse. It has never been the same since surgery and the latest prognosis was immobalise it within 10-15 years. I'm only 44 so this not a nice prospect.
Have you been back to see if a surgeon can help you? Or had more physio? X

Hi, my wrist also has a plate & pins & I felt that was stopping me bend my wrist. But after telling my consultant she showed me the xray which showed it was placed correctly & that over time with exercise my wrist should bend again.
Do not hesitate in asking your doc/consultant for an xray to elimimate any doubts you may have regarding your plate...you are the one experiencing the discomfort!
I often feel deflated as after 4 months I feel as though theres little change but tbh there is improvement although little.
You are much younger than me so do keep at it daily & believe me you will see progress.
Its such a frustrating debilitating injury that you feel theres no light at the end of the tunnel.
If you have any doubts do get another check up.
Good luck....hopefully after my op for a frozen shoulder also I will feel as though Im on my way to recovery.
Keep me updated....dnt give in...
