Wrist, palm and thumb pain plus sensitivity.😢

Hi, was wondering if anyone has had palm pain along with the usual pain from Carpal tunnel, the area just below my thumb is extremely sensitive to touch and has been very painful. I have to wear fingerless gloves bc anything that touches it I see stars.

My arms also hurt and are sensitive to touch from anything such as blanket's when I sleep.

Nerve pain has also been awful, I'm seeing a surgeon in the next two weeks as well as going for an EMG.

Currently taking 1200-1800mg of Gabapentin as well as diclofenic and nothing seems to help.

I've had to stop working and can only use my hands for a few hours before I'm in too much pain to do anything else.

I've been bracing on and off for close to a year and I am suffering greatly.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

To anyone that just had surgery, hang in there I hear it gets better and that time will heal!!

Thank you!!

    Dreadful story.

First question: did you have a carpal tunnel operation done?

If not, is there a scheduled surgery coming up?

?If not any planned surgery: Please consider it!

?Are your fingers, palm or wrist numb?

?I had a cts surgery done on my dominant hand in March 2014 (if I remember the date correctly),

?the worse symptoms before the surgery was my hand was so freakin' cold, like it was in ice water during the night, a kind of pain like hammer strokes. Plus my fingers got numb - worst part. Today 90-95% recovered. Sometimes 100%.

    ?Best of luck! /Ken

      Hi and thanks for replying!

I haven't had any surgery yet but I am getting an opinion by at least two surgeons in the next couple of weeks.

Yes, I do have numbness in my thumb, pointer and middle finger and I have pain in my wrist and forearms.Sometimes the pain is so excruciating I cannot move my wrist it feels like a spasm, a sharp pain feel like someone is sticking a knife in my wrist.

I also suffer from terrible nerve pain in all three fingers and hand also very, very painful.

I've felt the coldness as well!!

Did you have nerve pain, and did you take any meds before the surgery that helped ease any pain?

I'm so glad you found relief after the surgery and you have given me hope that if I do decide to have it I can possibly feel better and have use of my hands again!!

      Thank you!!!

Although you can get a wide variety of pains with CTS that description is not really typical so I would be careful to be as sure as possible that the diagnosis is really just CTS before rushing into treatment. Get some nerve conduction studies. If you can, get some imaging done. Probably best to see a rheumatologist or even possibly a neurologist before a surgeon. Maybe try some non-surgical treatment before resorting to the knife. JB

It sound like you might have trigger thumb. I have carpal tunnel and trigger thumb in both hands and your symptoms sound like mine.

      Hi,

Thanks for replying and sorry your also experiencing pain. How long have you had your symptoms?

I'm having and EMG nerve test done next week as well as finally seeing a hand surgeon. I've had this pain almost a year and it has stopped my life completely!

Tomorrow seeing the Rheumatologist have been eager to have blood work done to make sure it's nothing autoimmune.

How do you manage the pain and did you have surgery?

      Hi,

I've been dealing with tendonitis for over 20 years, but started dealing with nerve pain and trigger thumb about 2 years ago.  My nerve test showed mild/moderate CTS in both arms and of course my hand specialist is recommending surgery. Unfortunately, the statistics on successful surgeries is less than 50% and I'm just not willing to take that kind of risk to go under the knife. I'm currently seeing a chiropractor along with a lot of praying hoping to turn this around.

Hope your able to get more clarity on your exact condition/options.

      Hope you feel better soon!

      Veronica

The success rate is considerably better than 50% as long as you get the diagnosis right - who told you < 50%? Dr J Bland
