Wrong diagnosis??

After being diagnosed with vestibular neuritis im starting to doubt the diagnosis.

i was making steady progress but have taken a massive step back this week feeling dizzy as hell when im moving about im startin to feel im on the verge of another attack of BPPV or vertigo.

surely you cant go backwards with this as i feel like ive gone back 3 months

considering having the epley performed again as i cant take much more of this hell, i still feel i have something different to what they said its just a gut feeling i have

Anybody else made progress then gone backwards ?

I've had Vestibular Neuritis and/or BPPV for 7 weeks. My Physical Therapist taught me how to do the Epley Maneuver. I've done it every single day and was 98% better. Then yesterday I had 3 spinning bouts. So I did the Epley again and did so today. I will continue, since I made such excellent progress. In the meantime, I went to an ear specialist, otalaryngologist (!), who confirmed that I have it. I brought my records, and he said I have the relapse kind. That is, I've had it twice before this and may get it again. So he's sending me for Vestibular exercises so I can deal with it if I get it again. I didn't remember till now that I'd had it before. So I'm glad I'm doing this. I have high hopes, and I'll do whatever they tell me, since the Epley is working well. Above all, I think one needs to see a specialist beyond your GP.

Norman Doidge, 'The Brain that Changes itself!.  I,ve recommended this book before and plan to,buy it soon, but you can download it and read the first chapter about  our problem and a technique that was used with electrodes on the tongue   to get the brain 'back into gear'. Sounds good to me!!!

As I have never gone forwards!, it,s hard to say. but I should imagine if you have not been given the right diagnosis, hence incorrect treatment then I,d say it is entirely possible.  sometimes a treatme. Eve if it,s not for what you actually have, may seem like it helps for a  while, but the prooof of the pudding, as they say, soon proves it isn't,t!,   trust your gut feeling. And tell whoever is treating you all this, and ask questions, !!!

    Hi Steve,

I have recently been diagnosed with VN and have had this dizziness for 5 months.  I did feel like I was improving after 3 months and was considering returning to work.  Around Easter time I got worse and like you feel as though I have gone backwards.

I am currently in another forum discussing all my issues and have taken lots of good  help and advice e.g drink lots of water, continue with the VRT whuich I do at home (cooksey cawthorne) avoid too much salt.  I do not feel any improvment at present so asked to see a neurologist.  He sent me for an MRI/MRA scan just to check for are any other causes but does seem to think that it is VN (I awiat the resuts of the scan).  If you do feel there may be another cause it could be worth persuing with your Doctor even if only to put your mind at rest, have you had an MRI and or MRA scan (I think the MRA checks all the veins and arteries around the head)?

I have taken pills but like others have mentioned apparently this stops any progress with the repair of the vestibular so will cease taking them.

Can I ask what the epley manuever is as I have not yet been sent to see a Physical/Physio therapist for my VN.

Good luck in your recovery from this awful thing.

    Best wishes

Hi Laurence yea i have had MRI all clear the Epley manouvre is a way of steering the crystals in your inner ear back to where they belong, but u only need that performed if you are suffering from vertigo as far as i know

The Epley Maneuver is a series of movements of the head in specified way. It's demonstrated on YouTube. Also,my physical therapist ran me through it. You have to know which ear is the "offending" one. Then you're given the prescribed moves for that. The idea, as I understand it, is that some calcium crystals have broken off from the middle ear "bridge." They migrate to the three canals that give us balance. The exercise is supposed to nudge them back into place. Once I learned how to do it, I just did it myself at home every day. In my case, it helped enormously. Almost done with vertigo: about 5 or 6% still to go.

      Hi Marion,

Thankks for the information.  Does this work with Vestibular Neuritis as I am led to believe this only works for people who have vertigo due to crytals in the ear?
