X-rays for back pain possible spondylolisthesis.

I've had back pain constantly for almost 6 weeks, it has not gotten better and is worse if I do anything but does not get better with rest, I have had an X-ray to check for any sort of spondylolisthesis however everywhere I read said I should have been standing for this and mine were taken lying down? Will this affect the results?

Thanks

Hi Aylyz, it would show up whether you are standing or laying down. The X-ray will show if a vertebrae had slipped. Many back problems resolve with heat, Pilates type exercise to strengthen the core, acupuncture, and medication to reduce inflammation. When do you get your results? Hope it's not spondylolithesis.

Aylz, I have spondylolisthesis, diagnosed many years ago following a fall on my btm on a very shiny hard surface.  All my X-rays over the years have been taken with me lying flat and all have shown the slipped vertebrae.

When I had back problems only found out that the NHS  hadn't done a MRI  which had to pay a fortune for to find injections might help.

This was despite many A&E visits  & admin & primary care GPs not understanding criteria for investigation at tertiary level .Yet can prevent a fair second opinion even when Surgeons & private units  ask for NHS  referral .

Thanks smile I should have the results next week, I'd not be so bad if it wasn't keeping me off work as I work in roads maintenance and I drive lorries. I have had hyperlordosis for years so always had some degree of pain but it has gotten so much worse and now disrupting my sleep. Fingers crossed I get some answers soon. Thanks for your replies smile

Hi Aylz, I had an x-ray recently on my back and they were taken lying down.

The result was I have degenerative disc disease on the lower 3 or 4 discs. I've had lower back pain and hip joint pain for the last 6 months and I've now been refered for physio.

Hi, sorry to hear that, they said nothing showed up on my X-rays but I have been at physio for 2 sessions with nothing else scheduled just told to strengthen my core (which is pretty strong already as I've done insanity and had started focus T25 before this happened) physio thinks I could have disc problems but doctors just seem to want to put me back to work. Still in a lot of pain and I get the hip pain too, I've had it 11 weeks ish so I really feel for u 6 months most be horrible!

Hi I was diagnosed with this at birth, but they wouldn't operate until I was older. So when I was 35 they operated which was two years ago now. In some ways it helped no more threat of slipping right off but I'm now left in a wheelchair where ever I go but can manage on crutches in the house but the stairs is my Everest! I agree with everyone else my surgeon said you have to be standing because it shows stressors in your spin which lying down wont show. He told me a story of a man that complained of his foot dropping and unable to move it. So he had X-rays mri's alsorts but docs could see nothing! Couldn't explain it. Then one day this man saw a documentary about a similar case in America, but he had X-rays and MRI STANDING UP, right from the very first picture they saw a Huge tumour pressing on his lower spinal cord. This man told his doctors so they did the same low and behold they found the mans problem. This is an old story in medical terms as medical techniques change so quick. If I hadn't had my X-rays standing they wouldn't of seen how bad my case was. You never now when you go back for results they might get you to stand if not ask them to do a standing one, but prepare to argue your case. Stand firm and take backup to help you even if it's to hold your hand and keep charm.  Good luck x
