Acid reflux and stomach acid burning are both serious conditions that can disrupt a persons life. It can make us appreciate how amazing the human body is. When I was at my worst, I had at least 5 digestive problems. I did a lot of research and found that each problem described a very complex area of the body.
The first one was the worst, acid reflux. I almost suffocated one night when I woke up and could not breathe. Research described the esophageal sphincter as a muscle or valve, but it actually looks the same as the rest of the esophagus. They don't even know why it can stay closed all the time. It is also difficult to correct it when it malfunctions. I have a treatment for that, I can share it later.
I would like to have more information from you so I can perhaps determine the cause of the issues you are having.
PPi drugs can be viewed as a miracle drug initially, but then later the side effects occur and can be worse that the original problem. Side effects can be osteoporosis, bone fractures, heart damage, out of control bacterial infections, diarrhea, constipation, intestinal damage, dementia, and more.
A few people can be on them long term but most get addicted very quickly.
While taking probiotics seems like the logical solution. It is only a bandaid. Recent research has shown that probiotics can also become addictive. The intestinal system maintains a certain bacterial flora. When you add large amounts of foreign 'good' bacteria, your body can forget how to maintain it. Now they are talking about pre-biotics. These feed and support health flora. The first one that usually gets cut out is milk. Intestinal flora loves milk, and it helps to maintain it. Other pre-biotics are more complicated, like apple cider vinegar. or sauerkraut.
An example of the problem with PPi drugs is : A person has a dinner of salad and chicken. Normally the acid in the stomach would kill any bacteria on the salad or the chicken. But, since the acid is being blocked, the stomach will pass the whole mass, undigested into the intestines where the bacteria can cause all sorts of problems, including kidney damage.
So, I try to get people off these drugs very very slowly, while addressing the original issues.
If you have acid reflux then the first thing is to elevate the head of your bed by 8 inches. It is difficult at first, but necessary. Sorry for the long response, but I have even more information. Please describe how your issues started and any drugs you were taking on a regular basis and when the issues first occurred.

Hi Jonathan. I have found your reply very interesting. Is there any research to say that probiotics can cause dependence ? So far It has helped me. Im taking them in capsule form, activia yogert etc. My endoscopy showed mild inflammation but I am getting asthmatic symptoms from time to time. I am persevering without ppi and with life style changes. Since last October I developed these symptoms which were confusing. I thought I had esophageal spasms as the food wont go up or down stuck at lower esophageal sphincter. It was frightening experience. Since then I haven't tried any solid food such as doughy bread or even rice is difficult to digest. It feel like sitting in my stomach for hours. Digestive enzymes do help me. Could I have Ibs? I dont have classic ibs symptoms but get noisy gargling sound of the stomach, bloating and pain under left ribcage.
Is it better to take break from digestive enzymes? I am getting alot of relief from them though.

I have found some interesting information on pro and pre biotics. I think it can help all of us. I will try to post the links here.
I have found that changes to diet and digestive aids should be done slowly.
I will PM the links.
