Yet Another One

Another person I know ( best friends sister), has just been admitted to hospital after turning yellow with acute liver failure.

Apparently she looked 9 months pregnant and suddenly became disorientated, not knowing her own name. She told my friend she had come to see the wrong person as she didn't know her.

Obviously she's been detoxed. I told my friend to ask for campral and gave her info for it.

No-one on here will be surprised that the doctor said he'd checked in the BNF and it's not suitable for people with liver problems, and is too costly to even consider as she'll probably drink again!!

Another example of how AUD people are viewed, nevermind a consultant with lack of medical knowledge.

I last saw her six weeks ago and she was 'fine'. Never seen her drunk or drinking much. Her husband went in the loft to get a case for her things and found at least 100 empty wine bottles. He was totally unaware she'd been drinking two bottles of wine a day for years!

She only finished working in July, the start of the school holidays. She'd been a teacher for the last  30 years.

Same problem, same hospital, same ward and even the same consultant I'd seen before. Nothing changes, just another sad story

Sorry to say my friends sister died yesterday.

Her last week was in ICU as she had multi organ failure. She was on a ventilator and unconscious the whole week.

Paper Fairy (some older regulars will know who I mean) also has a friend with liver damage. Thankfully, not nearly as bad, providing she never drinks again!!

      Very sad to read that.

'Provided she never drinks again'.............yes, that is the big problem.

My goodness. What a sad and scary story for all of us, especially those of us still drinking.

Thanks for sharing that, I will think of it next time I reach for the bottle.

Horrific for certain. So many vodka bottles and also wine bottles as you listed. She must have been good at hiding it like all of us. A sad ending for the family.

Part of me now thinks she may have wanted how much she was drinking to be found out.

Her son drained her garden pond yesterday and found about 50 litre bottles of vodka filled with water (obviously to make them sink).

Surely if she wanted it a secret then why not just take them to the bottle bank? Her husband apparently has been buying her two bottles of wine a day, apparently to make her feel better!!

OMG this read is getting worse.  I can't believe it.  The poor poor woman, it is one thing of empty bottles of wine in the loft, but this is unbelievable.  I don't think she wanted to be found out - oh my what a desperate lady.  I take it she could drive - maybe she did take some to the bottle bank.  Holy hell, her poor insides.  I actually don't like this post at all Vicks - but I am glad you have done it - it sure scared my pants off.

      Keep well.

p.s. Give my love to Paper on your next email to each other - hope she is doing good and keeping herself well. G

      Hi gwen

Yes it is a horrible discussion, I couldn't agree more!

My only reason for posting these threads is to highlight the danger alcohol is. To many people, myself included, these things happen to other people, not me.

Yes she did drive and drove daily to work as a teacher and had a bottle bank at the end of her road.

Am also aware that I only post horror stories and it looks like everyone I know suffers from AUD!!

A final word is from the mouth of the consultant, AUD is just a cover up for an alcoholic. It makes it easier for alcoholics to continue drinking by making out it's a disease. Apparently it's a life choice, no-one forces an alcoholic to drink and people need to recognise that. It's a slow form of suicide!

What chance do we have with comments like that?
