YOGA

I am 4 months post thr and so far so good. I have been thinking about taking up yoga but wonder if it's too soon. I see my surgeon in December so maybe speak to him first about any potential risks? Would be interested to know if anyone else has tried yoga and when they did it post op. Thank you

Marilyn, if i were you I'd take up swimming, if you haven't already.

I regret not swimming more post op as i could virtually see the difference it made to my ROM.

For me before and after the op it was cycling that helped.

Can't see yoga doing you any harm as any sort of exercise as to help

I’ve come on leaps and bounds since I got in the pool. It’s 11 weeks since both hips totally replaced. I think my first session as mentioned by physio was 3 weeks ago once wounds ‘healed/sealed’ if you can’t get physio just do your normal post op exercises in the small pool somewhere ( it’s a few degrees warmer than big pool) Leg out to side. Tip toes stretch  ‘marching’ slowly bringing knee up ( amazing how much further it goes in the water) and ‘cycling’ movement in corner of pool so your arms comfy. I can’t tell you how this has improved my recovery. Swan 20 lengths in main pool after today too  I was still using one crutch outside up to Sunday due to right leg being so weak having limped on it for so long. Feel so good today x

Hi Marilyn, Have you done yoga before? I was doing it twice a week before my op as well as Pilates, aqua fit and gym. I was able to start Pilates once a week at week 6 post op under physio supervision. I also did pool based exercise, (walking, squats adduction etc in the water) and some gym. I didn’t feel ready to do aqua fit or yoga until about 4 months post op. I’m almost one year post op now and currently do one yoga class a week and I find it really helps my hip. ( I also do 4 aqua and 4 Pilates classes per week). There are certain yoga poses that you need to avoid or be very careful with. I do some of the balance postures like tree but not the more advanced stuff that sometimes can cause people to fall over while practising. Also things like pigeon pose are to be avoided as they put too much pressure on the joint. The yoga instructor should be able to advise you and there is info online if you search for yoga post op hip replacement. I don’t know exactly what yoga does better than Pilates but it really does feel different. Good luck
