yoga and pilates after hip replacement

Second hip now 6 months ago and I still feel apprehensive about the twisting positions that are so much part of yoga positions and pilates. I used to go to both classes for years,,,,and would like to start again. Any advice? as I feel so stiff...lower back particularly, I am 80!

    Hi Merelina,

I know a few ladies who returned to Pilates after a THR and six months post op should be fine. Just explain to the lady who teaches you so you can start gently, I cannot see a problem. I am four weeks post op on Wednesday and will return to Pilates as soon as I can. I see the physio in two weeks time and I will ask them when I can restart.

Hi merelina, I started clinical Pilates once a week at the physio dept of the hospital where I had my op. Part of Circle hospital group in the U.K.  They offered the sessions to anyone whether they had the op there or not. I paid to do the classes and for an initial assessment by the physio. The classes had 6 to 8 patients so lots of personal attention. I was surprised at how much I was allowed to do. I had 6 sessions then returned to my normal classes at the gym. The instructors there also helped adapt positions if I needed to. Yoga I started again at about 14 weeks post op and I still adapt or avoid some positions at 6 month post op. I have been able to do spinal twists etc without problems but you need to listen to your body and go cautiously with the help of your instructors. Good luck
