Yoga or Pilates after THR?

hello all, I'm 48 and 19 weeks post op THR, this week I went to a mc timoney chiropractor, it was very gentle and I feel so much better for it, because I was born with hip displacia my pelvis and back will never be totally aligned so she advised me to begin yoga classes, I'm well aware that I have to take things very slowly and won't be doing the lotus anytime soon, but I was also told that Pilates was the way forward after THR, I'm very confused as to which one would be better for me to start as I need to build up a lot of muscle in my bum cheek! And build strong muscles around my back, I'm concerned that much of yoga won't agree with the usual rules that apply to your body after THR, any advice would be most welcome, thank you x

Mc timoney is a very gentle type of chiropractice, I was very keen not to get too pulled around considering I'm still healing, I had to do something as post op I am walking straight for the first time in years and my back was hurting almost as much as my hip was pre op! I do feel so much better for it but I think I'm going to wait a while now for yoga x

After 5 weeks of PT I now need to search for the next workout which involves strengthening the buttocks, the stomach muscles.  I have curvature of the spine and will never be aligned.  I am trying to be positve about my leg discrepancy and hoping that they may equal out eventually.

Hi Jackie, you must maintain the precautions. You can do the exercises but some in yoga may not be for you. Pilates careful with those classes, but they are great. Emphasis your condition to the trainers, if you using trainers. I would go to a therapist and have them work on you until you're ready for more advanced exercises.

If you look at the anatomy of muscles it will show how your hip is wrapped around and the protection our body produces. Posterior Lateral is one operation required to cut into the muscle, tissues and tendons to get to the hip and resewed, while that is healing you cannot do exercises that can open your internal wound risking hip dislocation. As long those muscle are tight and strong your hip will dislocate.

I'm a long term yoga practitioner.

Despite having every faith in it, I would strongly advise specialist physiotherapy before gradually returning to yoga/Pilates.

Thank you Elaine, and I'm not even returning to it, I'm a total novice! This is why I was concerned x

Thank you all for your informative replies, I will take them all on board, it's so nice to be able to ask even what seems to be the silliest of questions and to be taken seriously, wishing you all well in your recoveries x

Hi Jackie,  I am 8 weeks post revision RTHR and have practised yoga for many years.  If you have never done it before I would advise you to wait until 6 months' post op and let your yoga teacher know about your op. He or she will be able to guide you and possibly adapt some of the poses for you.  My teacher has had a THR so she knows what I'm going through. She has given me some very gentle exercises to do at home and I hope to go back to class in January but will only be able to do a few of the poses.  I wouldn't even contemplate lying on the floor at the moment so I've got a few exercises I can do lying on the bed.  Yoga is non-competitive either with yourself or with other people and is very much a case of listening to your own body and only going as far as you feel able.  If you do decide on yoga find a good teacher and take it very carefully.

    Good luck,

    Stella x

Thank you, I have now decided to wait a while, I'm just so keen to rebuild very underused muscles but not sure which route to travel down, I think I will get Xmas out of the way and start on something, yoga/ Pilates based xx
