Zantac & omeprazole not working

Posted , 6 users are following.

Hi, I am new to this and would really appreciate your thoughts and advice.

About 6 weeks ago I got indigestion and heartburn in the bottom of my breastbone (the start of the stomach from the oesophagus) and took some Gavisgon.

This didn’t do anything so after a week I went to the GP who said it could be viral infection as I also had a little cough at the same time.

He give me Omeprazole but said he didn’t think it was reflux but it wouldn’t hurt to take them just in case.

2 weeks later it was still the same so I went back to the GP, who requested a chest x-ray (which came back clear). He also took full blood tests to check Liver, Thyroid, FBC, H-pylori and all came back clear and normal.

I have since been back again (last week) as still the same, but now I also have stomach pains and pains in my right side (next to my ribs). I was given Zantac and they requested an Endoscope to see what is going on.

I am a little concerned as if it were gastric then surely the tablets (omeprazole and zantac) would have reduced the pain a little?

I should point out that I do worry all the time and suffer from anxiety. Could this be severe anxiety or as if I think something more serious? Having goggled the symptoms pain in stomach and lasting indigestion looks like it could be anything from an ulcer, hernia to life taking illnesses.

Anyone had anything similar?

Omeprazole increased my anxiety tenfold. Also made me somewhat depressed. As soon as I stopped them I felt so much better! They have a lot of side effects. I found that if I dealt with my anxiety, either by excercise or meditation or my favourite, acupuncture, I could deal with the symptoms of acid reflux better. I also use flower remedies. Buy good quality ones or go to a registered professional. Take some form of probiotic for your gut and try ginger tea as it's anti-inflammatory.

I am waiting investigation with endoscopy as I am very poorly with what they call GERD which is very bad acid which causes me to cough. However that pain middle stomach and under right rib could be gallbladder. However DONT give up going back and back to GP. I kept on for 8 months and they refused me an endoscopy cos I had one in 2013 and except for hernia (which can cause pain too) all was clear. But I now have trouble swallowing. I am so angry with GPs - and all because my bloods were normal!! Keep pestering if it doesnt go away.Good luck

As others have said it could be nothing more than a pulled muscle, I had that. For some Omeprazole doesn't work there are others PPI such as Lanzaprozole

Hi sorry for the delay in coming back to you all. Thank-you for your replies I found them very helpful.

    Just to update you.

I have had an endoscopy (camera down) and also a camera up. They found that I have a small hiatus hernia and mild gastritis.

I was prescribed lansoprazole 30mg daliy.

These seem to be working but I have now lost nearly a stone in weight over the past 8 weeks.

I paid to have ultra sounds done last week on my gallbladder, liver, kidneys, prostate, spleen and pancreas. All showed normal.

So going back next week to discuss that if all I have is a hernia then surely I shouldn't be losing that much weight.

I just hope they are not missing somthing somewhere but because of this feeling I wonder if this mind thought could actually be the root cause of the weight loss as I know stress can create all sorts of problems.

A stone in 8 weeks is almost 2lbs a week so that is normal if you are on a diet.

FIrst do you have a stone to lose i.e. are you overweight. what does this do to your BMI

Do a calorie count and that could be the answer if you are eating some different things due to the reflux you may be eating less and so you lose weight. Are you exercising more?
