Zinc Gluconate?

Has anyone tried zinc supplements to manage their HS? I have come across references to a trial several times when surfing the internet and I am tempted to give it a go. You can get zinc gluconate from health food shops but would not ordinarily take it in such high doses so I figure that medical advice is required before embarking on this. I am going to ask my dermatologist at my next appointment but would be interested to hear from anyone who has already tried this therapy. Here are some details from the internet:

[i:81dd5b7e6c]\"A pilot study published in the journal \"Dermatology\" shows that zinc salts can provide an effective treatment for hidradenitis suppurativa.

A new therapeutic approach based on zinc salts was investigated with 22 patients, mainly from grade I or II in Hurley's clinical staging. All patients included had previously been prescribed a treatment (antibiotic, isotretinoin, surgery or anti-androgens), which was inefficient. The patients were treated with 90 mg of zinc gluconate per day (15 mg zinc, 6 times per day).

A clinical response in all patients was observed, with 8 complete remissions and 14 partial remissions. When complete remission was obtained, the treatment was progressively decreased; however, relapses occurred when reaching 2-4 capsules per day, depending on the severity of the disease. Recurrence disappeared when the dosage was increased again, suggesting that the treatment is suppressive rather than curative. The treatment was well tolerated (4/22 patients experiencing side-effects, mainly gastro-intestinal), and this is crucial in the context of a chronic disease strongly affecting quality of life.\"[/i:81dd5b7e6c]

    Susie,

I tried the Zinc and oh my god i was so ill,i dont know whether it was just me reacting badly to it. My lumps did clear up alot but i couldnt continue because i was vomitting alot and was very tired and irrate.

I would be very curious to see if anyone else (is brave enough) to try the Zinc and see if the reaction was just me as i said it did really help with the lumps.

    xx

    Hiya,

Have been reading about taking Zinc myself and have decided to give it a go - nothing ventured nothing gained! Have been taking for just over a week and think there is a slight improvement. Must say that I do feel knackered but that could also be because I have a 1yr old daughter. I discussed it with my plastic surgeon and he was happy for me to give it a go. They have got them on offer at the moment in Holland and Barratt so I stocked up on a load. Have been taking 1 x25mg tablet 4 times a day. Will keep you posted!

I have had HS for around 20 years - and now am virtually free of lessions - try cutting out all whole grains - ie: wholegrain bread, corn chips, muesli etc. As soon as I eat these - I have a flair up - if I don't eat them - I am free and clear - yipee :D

I take zinc and find it helps.

I also take garlic, prhibitive , a good multi vitamin and mineral.

I tried taking turmeric for a while, which reportedly helped some people, but it didn't work for me.
