Zoladex injection and side effects

Today is day 11 of my first zoladex injection. I’m anxiously waiting for the effects to kick in but as yet I’m not sure I’ve experienced any side effects? Can anyone share their experience of zoladex and let me know when it should start to take effect and stop my hormones.

Hi Jenn, I experienced side effects within the first few weeks. Very up and down with my moods, hot flushes got a lot worse, night sweats it just exasperated symptoms I was already experiencing. Strangely got a lot of aching joints too. I ended up on HRT for a month to counteract it, but was getting married abroad so didn't want to have the extreme side effects on my wedding day. Hope all goes well.

Thanks Bek, the pressure and pain in my abdomen has got worse and my belly is very hard so I’m not sure if it’s the flare effect. I just hope the fibroid starts shrinking soon xx

Hi Jenn, I had the same problem but later found out that my fibroid had degenerated and 'liquidised' and the pressure of a plane flight caused it to leak back into the body. Not trying to scare you at all, but to be honest it was never going to work for me. I think it was just left too long before treatment. I hope it all works well for you, I am sure it will as I have heard lots of positive stories too x x

      Thanks Bek,

I have a feeling that mine has been degenerating over the ast week or two. I have had cork screw type pain in my fibroids, child’s and my white blood cells are raised. On antibiotics and going back for another set of bloods next week. Did you have surgery? I am booked for a myomectomy in September xx

Hi Jenn, yes I did and felt so much better after. It was worth it, it took 8 months to get to that stage and I was 31/2kg by that time as I couldn't eat solid food, it was just too painful. I was very bloated too and I struggled to walk. I can genuinely say I couldn't wait for my surgery and I really did feel better after despite the op. If you need advice on the op let me know, as I remember initially being very nervous about the op but eventually being very relieved to have the fibroid removed. Lots of great support on here.

      Hi Bek,

My situation sounds very similar to yours, I feel like I’m wasting away but my belly is expanding. I can’t wait to feel normal again and be able to walk places. How large was your fibroid? Mines subserosal and in Feb it measured 18x13x11cm but I feel things have got worse since then. I just hope they can do the op without complications. I really want the op to come round quick but I am frightened too xx

Hi Jenn, it was initially fairly small 11 x 10x14, but I only had one scan and it wasn't really monitored. In the end it was 23×23cm but it was leaking so who knows. I kept saying it was getting larger and when they asked how I knew all I had to do was lie down and it would pop out my belly I looked pregnang. I literally lost so much weight I had nothing really for the injection to go in. To be honest I had my op earlier then planned after I collapsed ending up in A and E, by some fate a consultant spotted me and I was in surgery that afternoon. (complicated as it was misdiagnosed so I had to go through the referral and minimum wait time quite a few times). I ended up having a second surgery, bit complicated but the fibroid was too large and vascular the first time round, so I was put in zoladex and a second surgery done later. It was worth it and I understand how painful fibroid can be especially with the pressure. Strangely I had no periods for 2 years prior (which is different to most people). It could have been the weight loss, the fibroid, my body went into its own temporary menopause as the consultant described it. Very strange.

Wow you’ve had an awful time. 23cm x 23cm is huge! It’s nice to speak to someone who’s had the same problems I’m experiencing and come out the other side positive. I just hope things settle and I can make it to my surgery date in 9 weeks. I have been tempted to go to a and e several times when I’ve had severe pain and struggled to pass urine but I think they would treat it as an emergency and do a hysterectomy 🙈 hopefully the zoladex will work soon. Did it shrink yours down? Xx

      Hi Francis,

Today is day 12, I’ve had a lot of fibroid pain but that started before the zoladex so I’m on antibiotics. I am very bloated and uncomfortable but I’m not sure if it’s from an oestrogen flare or side effects from antibiotics. I’m still waiting for the zoladex to start working to hopefully shrink my fibroid and make life easier. I hardly felt the injection so I wouldn’t worry about that smile you will have to keep me posted how you get on and whether you feel the benefits of the zoladex xx
