Hi Diane, your mums use of zopiclone and her legs are unrelated. Especially if she has been taking them since 2009. She would of had the leg problem a long time ago

Hi, no she started the Zopiclone in the March  2009 began wobbling then the doctor gave her Bethahistine in the September 2009 she was then unable to walk with out assistance. She came to me last month for a holiday I paid for her to see specialist have scan etc all confirmed that her ears eyes brain were perfect it was the cocktail of drugs that they are giving her in the UK.

Its a possibility its related but unlikely. Unfortunately it could be a number of things. Can i ask why she was prescribed zopiclone? Also what dosage is she on?

She had a inner ear problem couldn't sleep hence the  high dose of Zopclone, then about a month later her legs started getting  as she put it unpredictable the doctor then gave her Bethahistine. She was sent for tests they say she had "benign positional paroxysmal vertigo". But all the side effects with the 2 are giving her all the problems she is suffering with now 5 years on with no after care from her GP still not sleeping. Whilst with me I took her for eye test came back perfect then a Neurologist blood tests and scan which came back clean no inner ear problem her reflexes Very Good muscle strength again good. I then showed him her repeat prescription he took one look and said cocktail for symptoms she does not have. She is wasting away before my eyes and its killing me. Yet there seems nothing wrong with her I have asked the doctor to give her time and talk with her, I've been banned from calling the surgery.

Your mother has the right to change which doctor she sees. She can move to a different medical practice in her area, and can see if a different doctor has a different view of her issues. What you describe sounds like a strange situation...you say she started to have problems with her legs after the zopiclone, but that the zopiclone was prescribed to help her sleep because she had an inner ear problem....and of course, an inner ear problem can cause balance problems. So how do you know that the balance problems are caused BY the zopiclone, if she was prescribed the zopiclone BECAUSE she had balance / inner ear problems? Maybe I'm misunderstanding the situation, but it sounds to me like your mum had some inner ear / balance problems...she saw the doctor, the doctor prescribed Betahistine, which is given for inner ear balance issues, and he also prescribed zopiclone because in some way, the inner ear problem made it difficult for her to sleep.  I'm therefore not sure why you think the drugs caused the problems she is having, when the reason she was prescribed these drugs in the first place is *because* she was having these problems?  As I said though, if your mum is in the UK, she can contact other doctor's practices in her area and ask to register with them, then see a different doctor and ask for a review.  The only problem with this though is that her medical notes will follow her, and the new doctor may well be influenced in their opinion by what the old doctor has recorded.

H Diane.  I have been taking Zopiclone for many many years now and they have not caused me any problems.  I have never heard of balance problems from people taking this drug either. It must be a combination of other things   If your mum is elderly she may just be having balance problems anyway.  But anything to do with the inner ear will make you unsteady.  She must get assessed by a different gp.
