A Study on Ubiquinol on Fatigue and Muscle Strength in Healthy Adults Taking GLP-1 Agonists
This study is investigating if a daily supplement called ubiquinol can help adults aged 30-65 who are taking a GLP-1 weight-loss medication, such as Wegovy or Mounjaro. The main goal is to see if ubiquinol can reduce tiredness and help maintain muscle strength during weight loss. Ubiquinol is a form of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), which is naturally made by your body and is important for energy production. Participants will take either ubiquinol or a dummy pill (placebo) for nine months, have home nurse visits for measurements, and attend monthly video calls with a dietitian. It's a fully remote study, meaning you won't need to visit a clinic.

What is this study about?
This research study wants to find out if taking a daily supplement called ubiquinol can make a difference for people who are using certain medications for weight loss, like Wegovy or Mounjaro. These weight-loss medications are becoming more common, and researchers want to understand how to support people taking them even better.
Specifically, the study is looking at two main things: whether ubiquinol can help reduce feelings of tiredness (fatigue) and if it can help maintain muscle strength while losing weight. Ubiquinol is a natural substance, a type of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), that our bodies make. It plays a really important role in helping our cells create energy. The idea is that by boosting levels of this energy-producing substance, people might feel more energetic and their muscles could be better supported during weight loss.
The study will compare people who take ubiquinol with those who take a placebo, which is a dummy pill that looks exactly the same but contains no active ingredient. This comparison helps researchers determine if any changes observed are truly due to the ubiquinol. About 90 people will take part in this study, which lasts for nine months and is completely remote, so you can join from home.
Key takeaways
- This study is testing ubiquinol for tiredness and muscle strength in adults taking Wegovy or Mounjaro.
- Ubiquinol is a natural substance involved in energy production in the body.
- Participants will take either ubiquinol or a dummy pill for 9 months.
- The study involves home nurse visits, video calls with a dietitian, and using a smartphone app.
- It's a fully remote study, so you don't need to visit a clinic.
- Your participation could help improve support for people using weight-loss medications.
Who may be eligible?
To be part of this study, you need to be an adult aged between 30 and 65 years old. You should have a body mass index (BMI) that falls within a certain range (between 27 and 35). Crucially, you must be either just starting or have recently started (within the last four weeks) taking a specific weight-loss medication prescribed by a doctor, such as Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg) or Mounjaro (tirzepatide).
You'll also need to be able to move around physically, for example, be able to do five sit-to-stand movements. Because this is a remote study, you'll need a smartphone that can download the study app (iPhone iOS 15.6 or newer, or Android 9 or newer) and your own digital weighing scales. You should be able to speak and read English well enough to understand the study materials, and you must be willing to give your full agreement to take part.
There are also some reasons why you wouldn't be able to join. For example, if you've already used ubiquinol or CoQ10 in the last three months, or if you have certain health conditions like type 1 or 2 diabetes, heart disease, or severe liver disease, as these might affect tiredness independently. You also can't take part if you've used statin medication before, have previously used GLP-1 weight-loss medicines (other than your current prescribed one), or have had weight-loss surgery. The study isn't suitable if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant during the study, or if you plan to stop your weight-loss medication within the nine-month study period.
Could this study suit you?
Answer these quick questions to see if you may be eligible. This is a guide only — the research team makes the final call.
- Are you between 30 and 65 years old?
- Are you currently taking Wegovy (2.4mg semaglutide) or Mounjaro (tirzepatide) for weight loss, and have you started it recently (within the last 4 weeks)?
- Do you have a smartphone (iPhone iOS 15.6+ or Android 9+) and your own digital weighing scales?
- Can you move easily and do simple sit-to-stand exercises?
- Are you NOT pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to get pregnant during the next 9 months?
What does participation involve?
If you join this study, you will take either one ubiquinol capsule (100 mg) or one placebo capsule (a dummy pill with no active ingredient) every day for nine months. You won't know which one you are taking.
A nurse will visit your home four times during the study (at the beginning, then after 3, 6, and 9 months). During these visits, the nurse will take a small blood sample, measure your body (like your weight and height), and watch you do a simple exercise test where you stand up and sit down a few times.
You will also have a short video call each month with a study dietitian, which will last about 20-30 minutes. Every three months, you'll need to complete some questionnaires and record what you eat for four days using a special smartphone app. You'll also log any exercise you do in the same app throughout the study. This study is completely remote, so you won't need to travel to a clinic or hospital at any point.

Common questions
What is ubiquinol?
Ubiquinol is a natural substance in your body, a type of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). It's important for helping your cells make energy.
Why is this study important?
This study aims to find out if ubiquinol can help people taking weight-loss medication feel less tired and keep their muscles strong, which could improve their overall well-being.
Will I know if I'm taking ubiquinol or a dummy pill?
No, you won't know whether you're taking the ubiquinol or a placebo (dummy pill) until after the study is finished. This is to ensure the results are fair and unbiased.
Do I need to visit a clinic?
No, this is a fully remote study. All assessments, including nurse visits, happen at your home, and other interactions are via video calls or a smartphone app.
How long does the study last?
If you take part, you will be in the study for a total of nine months.
