Meningitis can develop quickly and be life-threatening, so knowing the signs and how to respond is crucial. Our clear, easy-to-understand videos cover everything from what meningitis is and what causes it, to how to use the glass test to spot a worrying rash, and the vaccines available to protect you and your family.
Overview
Meningitis is an inflammation of the protective membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It is usually caused by an infection. If left untreated, meningitis can be life threatening.
Causes
Meningitis is mainly caused by bacterial or viral infections. It can also be caused by fungal infections or parasites.
Symptoms
Symptoms of meningitis often include a sudden high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light, nausea or vomiting, confusion, and sometimes a rash.
Diagnosis
The meningitis glass test is a simple way to check for a rash that could indicate meningitis. The test involves pressing a clear glass gently against the skin, and if the rash doesn’t fade or disappear under the pressure, it might be a sign of meningitis.
Vaccination
There are several vaccines available that protect against different types of meningitis-causing bacteria, including vaccines for meningococcal and pneumococcal.
