That's normal you can't rush rehab. More is not necessarily better. You should be back to "normal" in 6 - 8 weeks.

It's normal Allen, put a pillow between your legs too to stop your operated leg slipping onto the mattress. xx

yes i do use pillow between my legs..thanks hope it is normal.. never want this pain again.. never get another hip replacement...

Allen1028  The first couple of days after my op I said hiw I wished I had never had it done.  A week later I said I will never have the other one done.   Now five weeks and feeling much better I will have mu other done and am so happy I had this one done.  Yes I still have pain and yes I hate lying on my back.  I have never been a good sleeper.  I do get about one and a half to two hours on my side with a pillow in my legs and one near my back to stop my leg "falling off".  I am so afraid of something going wrong.  After readin posts here I am more confident that I am doing ok and sure you will feel the same as the weeks go.

      Oh-oh.

Can you do straight leg lifts?

Lay flat on the bed with your toes pointed up.

      Without bending your knee

Raise your heel up off the bed using only your hip muscles.

Can you do that with no pain?

    Hi Allen

I said exactly the same -never again. Week 1 was like a train crash and i spent most of it in tears, in pain and felt really bad. Week 2 -much better. By day 10 i was so much better. Week 3 and 4 on the whole were great. Off painkillers and down to one crutch . Just a few down days where i had tried to do too much. Week 5 -back to work. Week 10 and I am booked in for hip number 2 in 2 weeks time. 3 months to the day since hip 1

So try to stay positive. Everyone hates week one. Just try to focus on the gradual improvements and listen to your body. Try to lie flat for 2 hours every afternoon to let the blood flow more easily.Your body has been pulled and pushed all over the place and aches and pains move round as healing is happening. Try a bag of peas in a towel placed on your groin which will help with the pain and swelling in that area

    Take care

    Kare x

Take some painkiller!  Mon Dieu at 7 days I was on 400mg Tramadol .  And a bit less for THE NEXT 12 months.  No need to be in pain.  No one said THR would be pain free.  It is purgatory, worse than childbirth.  A body can't heal without proper sleep which slows progress. Get your sleep by whatever means.  Melatonin can be safely taken with tramadol... Don't suffer..

I was taking 8 tramadol 400mg and 8 paracetemol a day when I came home.  I do not do pain.  I did say in hospital child birth was easier.   Now week five I have 3 or 4 tramodol a day 150/200 mg and 6 paracetemol.  Before my op I was taking amitriptyline too for pain, they have gone now.  I hope you find relief soon.

You are the first one I ever heard of that was prescribed dilaudid. In fact I have never heard of that drug.

I was taking 2 pills that were

400mg paracetamol [Tylenol] + 25 mg of Codeine.

That would completely remove my pain for a few hours, and greatly reduced my pain for about 5 hours.

I coudn't have made it without the codeine.

But remember pain pill are all constipating, especially Codeine, so you need to take a stool softner and I also drank a big glass of prune juice every day.

I was on Tramadol in the hospital but I had a terrible psychological reaction to it, very dark disturbing thoughts. When I got home from the hospital I called my general practitioner, he made a house call and he prescribed the codeine. That was the ticket for me.

You don't have to have such pain, call back the doctor and tell him/her that the pain medication is insufficient for you. Or do like I did and call your regular doctor if you don't want the hassle of working through the surgeons office.

Allen - you have to remember that the hip joint is the biggest in the body, and very difficult to dis-locate, which is what they need to do to replace. They have given all your muscles in and around your pelvis a serious workout. I'm sure you have strained a muscle in your arm or shoulder from overdoing something in your life, think of it like that.  Having been there and done THR twice, yes you are very sore and tight across your pelvis. Go with the pillow between knees, I found a slightly firmer well stuffed 8 inch, couch cushion/pillow worked for me, keep doing your post surgery exercices, leg swings, lifting knee, imagine sitting in a chair bum down, (don't go too far), it all seems to be gently gently, and moving the muscles a little, your own weight of the leg and body, pushing your weight back to standing, does the rest. yes it hurts but the rewards make it worthwhile, and don't over do it, If you do you will know about it.  I remember my uncle in his 80's when he had THR said you improve 1-2% a day, and then before you realise it you are walking to the next door neighbours letter box, and then to the second neighbour's letter box, and so on, freedom.

I agree  ithe others - pain, in my case worse than before surgery,  is normal and in these early stages needs controlling with regular medication. You  were out of hospital very quickly. I had my surgery two days before you, but was not released from hospital until the following Monday, so had longer with ready access to strong pain meds (morphine) and reassurance.I'm grateful for this. I think you are expecting a lot of yourself. Now on day 10, my pain is much more manageable and things are now getting better each day. You will be glad you did this before too long.
