1 year down

Morning fellow hippies!!  Well I'm coming up on a year since my revision.  As most of you all know I had my first hip replacement then 3 weeks later I'm having a total hip revision due to a dislocation.   It was traumatic for me as I had to be non weight bearing for 6 weeks.  It was so hard not to be able to get around and doing what I normally did.  I'm still not feeling better as now I'm having nerve pain and sensitivity in my thigh.  Has been going on for 8 months now.  Injections, medications are not helping much.  I saw my surgeon and he has lifted more of the restrictions I had.  This time he referred me to a neurologist to see what is going on.  I'm still so stiff and limp without my cane.  It's been a disheartening ordeal for me.  I try to think positive and have hope one day I'll wake up and finally feel good.  But it's hard......it's like I'm never going to feel better again......this forum has been good for the most part, giving me a glimmer of hope, some ideas and support.  I've tried to do the same for others....but some days I just don't have it in me. I feel like not getting out of bed.  I'm unhappy with my outcome if only I could get over this nerve pain!!  I'm not in the bone on bone pain anymore.   I don't see much on this forum from  other hippies about the nerve pain and sensitivity in the thigh  and wonder if I'm that odd ball!  The one who will get that one condition that's rare!   Please note my first surgery was anterior, the revision was posterior.   Thank you all for your support, and advice.  Wishing you all the best and God's blessings!!   Hugs 🤗 Linda.

    Dear Linda

I'm sorry that the nerve pain and sensitivity in your thigh is still holding you back from making a complete recovery. Yes it is a real bummer and so dispiriting having to be non weight bearing for six weeks. I had to be for five weeks and it seemed to be forever so I feel for anyone in a similar situation.

I see that your original surgery was an anterior but that the revision was posterior and wonder why that was as I would have expected the cut to have been in the same place as before. That seems to have been the case for me but there was a interval of twenty years so that may be the reason. Just curious!

I wish you and others having issues an improvement very soon.

    Best wishes Richard

Yea I think because the new hip was loose and he had to re do the whole darn thing!  The ball of the joint was caught up on back of cup.  So he probably needed to get full view of hip.  Also my staples were even out yet when I had revision!   I felt traumatized by this.  It's been hard.  But hopefully I will get better.   Thanks again. Dear Linda

Thanks for explaining. It's been tough for you. It's bad enough having hip surgery without having to do it all again! You will get there.

      All the best Richard

Linda, sorry you are having so much nerve pain. After 2 weeks my nerve pain is better. I only have problems in the mornings when I first get up. I hope the neurologist can help you.

I am still using my cane lightly it helps my gait. I am still limping just a little. I figure I best walk correct be for letting it go.completely. Today was my first day going the pool to exercise. It was scary at first but felt good.

Wishing you the best at your appointment

    Dear Linda

I feel for you going through all that pain when you should be getting better. I do have a bit of sensitivity on the back of my thigh which stops me from sitting for long periods in chairs that press there but I'm only 2 1/2 weeks post surgery so that isn't surprising.

I just hope the doctors will find the cause of the problem and sort it out.

Thank you Michael.   I'm hoping the same too.  Is this your first hip replacement?   Wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery and healing.   Hugs 🤗 LD

Hi Linda. I'm 3 weeks post total right hip replacement. I'm making a good recovery so far. I know how you are feeling and how much pain you must be in . 8 years ago I had a very bad accident totally shattering the bones in my left foot. I have suffered from chronic nerve pain ever since and have a permanent limp. I'm told now that my left hip needs replacing too. I just don't know how I'm going to cope with that when the time comes

Oh my goodness I'm sorry for your pain.  I can't imagine being in that kind of pain for that long!  There's nothing that can be done for you?   Especially now that getting your hip replaced is in the horizon for you.   I've been like this for about 7 months now and I can't fathom the idea of being like this forever!  I hope all goes well for you and God's blessings to you.   Hugs 🤗Linda

Hi linda81469, I'm so sorry that hear that you're still not feels my better. I've had chronic pain now since 2012 so I do understand how it can get you down. I don't know if you in the U.K.  or in the states but if you can, try and see a pain management specialist who could possible help you with some therapy. I took a pain management therapy course last year and it taught me all sort of useful techniques which have helped me understand how to deal with the pain. E.G mindfulness, meditation and particularly for me, physio. I was sceptical but have found some of it very helpful. Good luck. Suzie58

Thank you Suzie.  Yes being in pain is really the pits!!  It affects your life to the point that you don't want to do anything except lie in bed!!   At least for me.  Thing is I'm ok right now for the summertime wearing shorts but come winter ??, I can't be wearing shorts!!  And at night it's awful at times cause even my softest blanket bothers me!!   I haven't been able to wear any of my summer dresses.   😩  Anything that touches my thigh bothers me!   I will ask dr about therapy. I wonder if it's not scar tissue pressing on the nerve causing me trouble.    Hugs 🤗Linda

Sounds awful Linda, you poor thing. I do have a neighbour who had a knee op that caused her to have what sounds  like the same problem. She used to wear trousers that she'd had to cut one leg down even in the winter time. It took her a long time and lots of treatment but she is now back to work and functioning very well. I wish you all the very best Linda

    Hi Linda,

I really have nothing to add - According to the responses it shows that you definitely are not alone -

The low mood and depression you find you find yourself in are not unusual - to me it came in waves ..

However, I never regretted the surgeries - I was in a lot of pain and the alternative would have been: Pain and wheelchair bound - so I'd rather deal with stiffness and soreness, the groin area (still an issue), walking funny and getting tired real fast - still negotiating my outings, like how many stops I can handle (getting in and out of car) and where I can use a public bathroom -

Hopefully the neurologist will be able to help you, or, at least listen to you and gives you the attention you need -

    big warm hug

Morning Renee.  Thanks.   I know what you are saying, being in pain all the time prior to surgery and walking becoming more and more difficult.....for me tho it's just not what I was expecting.  Someone told me it was my fault I dislocated my hip because I was hard headed and doing things I shouldn't of been doing!!  Honestly I don't know when or how it happened.  Getting a revision so soon after the first hip replacement and non weight bearing for 6 weeks didn't help me and I get depressed cause I'm not feeling good to enjoy my life the way I thought I was.  The sensitivity gets pretty intense and I can't wait to get home and change and lay down!!  That's no way to live!!  I'm 54 and was hoping to enjoy my family and my life more.   Hopefully one day....😞  Hugs 🤗 Linda

good morning from the Netherlands Linda,

People can be so insensitive and say things not realizing the impact it has ..

you know better that that, darling - it's just that it is so easy to blame ourselves and take it out on ourselves as well -

I hear it often and it gets me down ... they tell me that I should have done my exercises more, go out for more walks or asked for help - And when I agree, I feel miserable and depressed -

I did the best I could considereing the circumstances and cannot change that now -

The same for you ... it is just not true ... it sucks though that it happened -

Wouldn't it be nice to just meet with all the members here, sit around. having a beverage of our own chosing and tell our stories - we would have so much fun through our tears ...

      Big warm hug

it is going to be okay ... Enjoy life and family as much as you can right now - you are loved -

      angel blessings

Hi Linda. I am 2 weeks post op and last night I went to sleep correctly lying on my back with a pillow between my legs. In the night I woke up lying on unoperated side, pillow nowhere to be seen and my operated leg was over other leg and knee down on mates !!!!!!! absolute worst scenario. Luckily all was ok but I can fully understand dislocation without knowing why. Do not blame yourself. You will feel much better in time

Hi Linda. I feel so sorry for you. Whenever I dislocated I didn't know it either, was in pain since my thr until March 2017 - so much pain I was in bed 3/4 of the day/night. I honestly hope you find some answers, being in pain is not any fun. I can relate can't wait to get home and lay down or just being at home and getting in there to lay down even now after my revision.

?My prayers and thoughts are with you.

      God's Blessings.

I do hope that today's hospital visit produces some answers for you. BTW what approach did you have? My apologies for not remembering.

Morning Ken.  Not t a hospital visit a ofc visit with pain dr.  I asked for MRI of hip and thigh.  My thigh has an area that's always swollen.  It's mid thigh.  As well as a small are on side of buttock.  Something's going on in there.  Hopefully this MRI will show it!!!   I'm here now wtg.  Will post new discussion later on the outcome!   I had the anterior my first surgery the second one was on side of hip about 2/3 inches away from anterior.   Dr said he had to remove butt muscle. 😖  Hugs 🤗 Linda

Hi Linda. I have similar pain and been told it is due to scar tissue attaching itself to my tendons.

Be interested what your Dr says.

Morning nick.  So is there any solution for that?   Will it go away?  I'll see what MRI of thigh shows.  Nothing came up on MRI of hip.  No blood clot either.   I can't live this way tho.   It's terrible having this pain and sensitivity every day!   How are you coping?   Hugs 🤗 Linda

      Hi Linda

Well I've tried everything but they say it's so deep that I probably need an Operation but I'm waiting to hear more. I find that putting an ice pack helpsamd that is my default solution but not very practical.

Its very frustrating but something I've got used to.

Sorry for all these questions!  But where are you feeling your pain?  Is it sensitive to the touch?  Is your scar tissue in and around the incision?  I've read about that fascia blaster.   The woman who designed it also had hip replacement surgery!   Supposedly breaks up scar tissue and stuff.  It's expensive and I would hate to get hurt using it!!  Thanks again for sharing.   I'm in discomfort right now.  Have my capri workout pants on to go to gym.   That's how bothersome my thigh is.  😖😫.  Even my softest blanket bothers me.  Anything that brushes up against my thigh!!

      Hi Linda

The area around the incision is mainly where I feel soreness. It's tender to touch but also sometimes grates a bit when bend my leg lifting knee up towards face. As if the scar tissue is rubbing the tendon when I bend my knee. I also feel something like a tightness/ swelling more towards the front and at top of hip. Not sure if tge bursa is inflamed. That sometimes gets worse when I walk a distance.

I've had shockwave therapy. Is that what you mean by fascia blaster ?

I can wear clothes which rub though although not that comfortable.
