Morning fellow hippies!!  Well I'm coming up on a year since my revision.  As most of you all know I had my first hip replacement then 3 weeks later I'm having a total hip revision due to a dislocation.   It was traumatic for me as I had to be non weight bearing for 6 weeks.  It was so hard not to be able to get around and doing what I normally did.  I'm still not feeling better as now I'm having nerve pain and sensitivity in my thigh.  Has been going on for 8 months now.  Injections, medications are not helping much.  I saw my surgeon and he has lifted more of the restrictions I had.  This time he referred me to a neurologist to see what is going on.  I'm still so stiff and limp without my cane.  It's been a disheartening ordeal for me.  I try to think positive and have hope one day I'll wake up and finally feel good.  But it's hard......it's like I'm never going to feel better again......this forum has been good for the most part, giving me a glimmer of hope, some ideas and support.  I've tried to do the same for others....but some days I just don't have it in me. I feel like not getting out of bed.  I'm unhappy with my outcome if only I could get over this nerve pain!!  I'm not in the bone on bone pain anymore.   I don't see much on this forum from  other hippies about the nerve pain and sensitivity in the thigh  and wonder if I'm that odd ball!  The one who will get that one condition that's rare!   Please note my first surgery was anterior, the revision was posterior.   Thank you all for your support, and advice.  Wishing you all the best and God's blessings!!   Hugs 🤗 Linda.

Hi Linda, I've been reading your posts for a year, I think we had our replacements round about the same time, and I remember when you wrote about your dislocation. I'm so sorry that you are still in so much pain, and I really hope that the neurologist will be able to help, and provide answers and a solution for you. You must be completely fed up.

Wishing you the very best, Judith

Morning Judith.  We are in a flood flash warning here in San Antonio Texas this morning.  Yea it's been disheartening with this nerve pain.  It didn't start till about 4/5 months later!  That's what is so annoying and depressing!  And anything that touches my thigh bothers me so I'm limited to just wearing shorts and short shorts cause it's mid thigh and side of thigh that the sensitivity starts!   I'm hoping that the neurologist can get this under control for me and tell me what happened. I hope  it's not a permanent situation!  Winter will be here and short shorts are not something I want to keep wearing!! Hugs 🤗Linda

    Hi Linda,

We had our surgeries about the same time last year and we've kept in touch over the past 12 months.  I'm so sorry that you are still struggling with nerve pain, and I wish that I could offer some advice.  It sounds as though you are not alone though.  I think of you often and I promise that if I hear of anything that might help, I will let you know.

I sounds as though Auntie Beanie found help for her nerve pain.  Keep reaching out to the specialist.  I feel confident that someone has the answer.  Don't give up looking.

Dav so sorry to hear about your struggles...,it's not fair...we get this surgery to feel better and then this happens!!!   I wasn't expecting this nerve pain.  I need to get this under control!!!   I have the tingling down to knee.  I went today to neurologist.  Getting nerve study and MRI on back done.   We'll see what outcome is.

Dave have you tried using a TENS machine?   I find it helps with pain.  I'm still icing and using heat.  Praying for you.  Hugs 🤗 Linda

Hi, just found this website wish I had found it 3 years ago. Well I had my right hip repalced 3 year ago, but like you have been in pain ever since, my surgeon was very critical of me and even said that everything was fine, I had a second opinion at the same hospital he at first said there was something wrong, but when I wrote to make a formal complaint he retracted what he had said. So I decided to see my GP and virtutally force him to refer me to another specialist for a thorough investigation, I went to the Royal National Orthopaedic hoisptal althought is has take a long time, they have suggested that the acetabulum , (cuo) is not in the correct position and is impinging on tendons and nerves. so at the end of this month I am being admitted for revision surgery which means they are removing the old titanium bits and putting in a new one in the correct position in the hope that it gets better. Its all a bit drastic and I am so scared that it will either be the same or worse but people have told me to have faith. yeah right.  So all I can say Linda is. go to the RNOH they will do some tests and they will probably inject you with a steroid into the bursa muscle??? if that cures your pain then that means the joint has to be done again. problem with RNOH is that its 100 miles from wher I live but will let you know in a cuple of months how things are. chin up, god bless. Morning, well I am 3 weeks post op, they changed the date. I have a 14inch scar with 34 staples, had them out over a week ago. Am mobile with crutches, one crutch around the house and if i go for a walk i carry the other one just in case. Sadly I still have pain in the groin I can do all of the exercises given to me with the exception of one which is lifting the operated leg in the standing position, that hurts too much. My follow up appt is not until 30 October and I am worried that something may be wrong but I will hang on in there, the swelling of the legs is a hinderance as its difficult to bend the knee a bit like trying to bend a cucumber in half without snapping it. My Physio starts on 19 October lets see what they have to say, I do hope they actually do something positive rather than look and send me home with a sheet of paper with exercises that I already have. Hope your Tendonitis and Bursitis is under control, take care.... Ken

      Hi Ken

One piece of advice I would give is to use both crutches outside. As has been said on here before the crutches are to provide support for your new hip until it has bedded in properly and your muscles are repaired enough that they are assisting with movement of the hip. Also so that we make sure we are walking correctly with straight back, heel to toe until we are doing this without any pain. To dump either crutch too early can actually lengthen the healing process.

I could walk unaided at around 4 weeks but continued with both crutches ensuring every single step was correct. At 6 weeks I was able to dump the crutches and permanently walk with no limp or pain and very good gait.

Hope this helps with the pain in your groin and ability to lift your leg.

We are all eager to get back to normal but we need to do it at our own bodies pace rather than our expectations.

      Dear ken.s

I really would continue to use both crutches until you are walking well with a good gait and no hint of limping.   The fact that you cannot lift your leg when standing is clear evidence to me that you are not anywhere near ready to put the crutches to one side.

      Cheers

      Hi Richard

At this point about using 2 crutches I would like to thank you as you told me about this and I followed your advice and know it is why my walking and recovery has been so good. You're a star. Thanks x

      Dear Sandra.

Thanks for that. Sometimes I think I must sound like a stuck record but as you and I found this is really important.

I cannot understand why physios seem to want to move people onto one or no crutches before they are ready for it. Do they get a bonus I wonder! Ah I think I know why....there is more chance of back pain and longer recovery time so they have a job for longer <BG>

      Glad it helped you.

      Cheers Richard

Or even continuing muscle pain even !!!! I have had no physio and hardly done any exercises but I have been working on our half acre veg garden doing everything I can without breaking restrictions since 4 weeks post op so feel I'm working muscles up anyway.

Totally agree Richard, I used 2 crutches outside until 6 weeks. Walked all over the place!

      Dear Richard,

cheesygrin LOL on sounding like a stuck record !

Sometimes it feels that way to us, Richard - I have been here on the forum for a long time and naturally I see some topics being repeated .. And so do you ...

we share our experiences and what works(-ed) for us - many new members are joining - I found this forum 3 weeks post-op from 1st THR when I had the groin pain and didn't know why ...

Groin pain is still a recurring topic ---

We don't get a lot of information so coming here is such a blessing - real people sharing ...

I don't know what their deal is about walking unaided  either ... even my surgeon told me at follow up appointment that i should lose then cane !!!!  for a moment I felt like a total failure for not being able to do so ...

I think they just don't really know - but they should !

I hope all is going well with you and please keep sharing ...

      big warm hug

      Dear Renee

Thanks for that.   I feel as you do that we all have a duty to help however we feel we can to save others from making the mistakes that perhaps we made or to make suggestions that may help.

Yes I'm feeling a bit more positive following my visit on Friday as my ankle surgeon is going to try and replace my five year old ankle prosthesis with a different design one which is being modified to suit me.  Still quite a big question mark over how successful it will be, but he is one of the best in the UK from the research I've done over the past ten months so I think that I've given it my very best shot!

      Cheers

      Richard
